Normal people dont do so, but all our internet providers do so. So if you visit illegal sites, your (their) provider will know and if it really come to a search, they gonna find you because every network interface has a unique hardware address so they can always bind the number to a computer. |

For example: if you were to log onto an email server they could not read the emails you send/read...only the fact that you logged onto that specific email server would be available to them. |

Completely false. Look up "mirroring a port on a switch" and "man in middle attack" and tools like "SSL strip" Whoever owns the equipment, CAN own your data...whether they would go through the trouble or spend the time to do so is another story. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 73480370 United States 05/02/2017 04:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If your neighbors WIFi isn't passworded, they could have it deliberately open just to sniff random people's traffic, such as yourself. Or, it could be a fake access point set up to sniff everyone who connects. as stated earlier by someone, if you'd use a VPN then it would be safe to use open WIFI. Don't even use public WIFI on ANY device without a VPN. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72968123 Poland 05/02/2017 05:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | your neighbors isp will have all the logs to what you have been up to. any trouble you get into online will come back to your neighbor and authorities may discover you if they investigate. anyone nearby (wifi has a long range) can see in real time what you are doing on the net on an unsecured wireless (wifi) network (no password), with the right tools. if the wifi router / network you connect to has encryption like wpa2-psk (and a password is set, a lesser standard than this like wpa can probably be hacked these days) then anyone connected to / on the wifi network at the same time you are will be able to see what you are doing, with the right tools, unless the website your on has a secure (encrypted) connection (padlock pic in browser usually green). get a vpn if you want privacy from nearby people and anyone connected to the same wifi network as you, some are better than others, some apparently leak stuff, honestly i dont know if they are 100% secure. you can see who is currently connected to (on) your wifi network using a free tool like wnetwatcher by Nir Soft. wireless routers do have logs but usually basic ones, they will record your computers mac address though, which can be used to identify your computer, although i dont think a web search of your mac address will list your details, its more if authorities get hold of your computer. am i correct here? |
