THERESA MAY'S FLORENCE SPEECH CONFIRMS HARD BREXIT

"The United Kingdom is leaving the European Union. We will no longer be members of its single market or its customs union. For we understand that the single market’s four freedoms are indivisible for our European friends.

We recognise that the single market is built on a balance of rights and obligations. And we do not pretend that you can have all the benefits of membership of the single market without its obligations.
So our task is to find a new framework that allows for a close economic partnership but holds those rights and obligations in a new and different balance...

So we are proposing a bold new strategic agreement that provides a comprehensive framework for future security, law enforcement and criminal justice co-operation: a treaty between the UK and the EU. This would complement the extensive and mature bi-lateral relationships that we already have with European friends to promote our common security...

The United Kingdom will cease to be a member of the European Union on 29th March 2019."

Conservatives agree pact with DUP to support May government

An agreement has been reached which will see the Democratic Unionist Party back Theresa May's minority government.

The deal, which comes two weeks after the election resulted in a hung Parliament, will see the 10 DUP MPs back the Tories in key Commons votes.

There will be £1bn extra for Northern Ireland over the next two years.
DUP leader Arlene Foster said the "wide-ranging" pact was "good for Northern Ireland and the UK" but one critic said it was a "straight bung".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the deal was "clearly not in the national interest", and Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams said it enabled a "Tory Brexit which threatens the Good Friday Agreement".
It has prompted calls for matching public investment in Wales and Scotland.

A three page document outlining the terms of the agreement has been published in full. The DUP said it would apply for the lifetime of the Parliament, scheduled to last five years, but would also be reviewed at the end of the current session in two years' time.

As part of the deal, the military covenant will be implemented in full in Northern Ireland, meaning more focus on the treatment of military veterans, while the triple lock guarantee of at least a 2.5% rise in the state pension each year, and winter fuel payments, will be maintained throughout the UK.

Other key points of the agreement include:

The DUP will support the Tories on all Brexit and security legislation

The UK's 2% Nato defence spending target will continue to be met

Cash support for farmers will remain at current levels until the next election

Both parties to adhere to commitments in Good Friday Agreement

No Irish border poll without "consent of the people"

First, we had the Brexit megathread.

Then we had the British election thread and its baby brother: Thread: Scotland saved Brexit

And now I bring you...the Brexit negotiation thread!

uk uk uk uk uk

With the Conservatives leading a weakened coalition government in Britain, the Brexit negotiations are off to a bad start for Britain.

At stake: Nothing less than the future of Britain.

I'll update this thread regularly with the latest news, and will link some of it in Luisport's WW3 thread for those who typically get their news there.

To begin, here's a video from Sargon of Akkad to get yourselves up to speed on the core issue: the European Single Market.

Brexit:

The United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union (EU), commonly called "Brexit",[1] is the result of a majority of British voters deciding to leave the EU in the referendum on the issue on 23 June 2016. Prime Minister Theresa May invoked Article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union on 29 March 2017, starting the two-year period of withdrawal negotiations. The UK is therefore set to leave the EU by April 2019.[2]

The terms of withdrawal have not yet been negotiated, and the UK remains a full member of the European Union.[3] May said that the UK government would not seek permanent single market membership,[4] and promised a Great Repeal Bill that would repeal the European Communities Act and would incorporate existing European Union law into the domestic law of the UK.[5]

The UK joined the European Communities, the predecessor of the EU, on 1 January 1973.[6][7] A referendum in 1975 approved its membership. In the 1970s and 1980s, withdrawal from the EC was advocated mainly by Labour Party and trade union figures. From the 1990s, the main advocates of withdrawal from the EU were the newly founded UK Independence Party (UKIP) and an increasing number of Conservative MPs.

The departure of the UK is expected to have a major effect on the EU: Germany and her remaining northern EU allies will lose their blocking minority of 35% in the Council of the European Union, enabling the other EU countries to enforce specific proposals such as relaxing EU budget discipline or providing EU-wide deposit guarantees within the banking union.

Ruth Davidson: 'No plans for breakaway party'

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has dismissed reports that Scots Tories might "break away" from the main UK party.

She tweeted that she fought a leadership campaign opposing the idea of a separate organisation in Scotland.

Tory MSP Murdo Fraser, however, said Scots MPs would "work behind the scenes" to champion Scotland's interests on issues like immigration.

Yes. But the hope is that the English Tories will pull through with a hard Brexit, or that the EU will refuse to allow a soft Brexit. Juncker and Tusk have taken a VERY tough stand in it.

Theresa May’s ‘abusive’ top advisers quit as Tory recriminations grow

Theresa May was forced to sacrifice her two closest advisers – Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy – on Saturday, as Tory recriminations grew over the party’s catastrophic general election performance.

The two aides, who were joint chiefs of staff, have been widely blamed for both strategic and policy failings during the campaign and had become increasingly unpopular among ministers and MPs for their abrasive styles and refusal to listen to advice even from cabinet ministers.

Their removal from Downing Street is a stark demonstration of May’s weakness in the aftermath of an election that has left the prime minister clinging to power, stripped of an outright majority, and lacking the mandate for Brexit that she sought. She is now deprived of the two people she had trusted most and who were with her during her transition from the Home Office to No 10.

Whitehall protest: Hundreds march on Downing Street against Theresa May's 'hateful' DUP alliance

Hundreds of people marched towards Downing Street in protest of Theresa May’s “hateful” alliance with the socially hardline Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Protesters chanted outside Downing Street, blasting the Conservative Party for uniting with the DUP, which has drawn criticism for its right-wing stance on issues such gay rights and abortion.

People carried placards reading anti-DUP and pro-Jeremy Corbyn messages, while chants of “Tories out, refugees in” echoed across Parliament Square.

The protest comes the day after Mrs May formed a minority government propped up by the DUP, having failed to win a majority in Thursday’s General Election.

There's another dimension that I haven't heard anyone mention yet: Brexiteers are a huge voting block now. And they coalesced around the Tories. That means the Tories now depend on Brexiteers - and that means Tories will work for them.

Theresa May's general election disaster all down to her calamitous campaign, Ashcroft poll reveals

The critical damage Theresa May wreaked on her chances of winning the election during a disastrous campaign has been laid bare in a poll published by a senior Conservative donor.

A survey by long-standing Tory supporter Lord Michael Ashcroft on 8 June revealed huge numbers of people who voted Labour only made up their minds to do so in the last weeks and days beforehand.

Now, the survey has revealed that 26 per cent of Labour voters committed to the party in “the last few days”.

And 57 per cent of those who backed Jeremy Corbyn's party said they made their decision in the last month – indicating the poorly regarded Conservative campaign was a factor in their decision.

In contrast, Conservative voters were more likely to know from the outset which way they were voting, Lord Ashcroft said.

But her biggest single mistake is seen as the social care fiasco, which affected elderly homeowners – usually a solid Tory support base.

MAY’S NEW CHIEF OF STAFF: REMAINER WHO CALLED FARAGE A “BIGOT” AND “RACIST”

The appointment is a hugely controversial one for those of us who believe in Brexit Britain. Barwell wanted the UK to Remain inside the European Union and branded Nigel Farage a “bigot” and a “racist” who “hates modern Britain” in the run up to the EU referendum.

Speaking to Westmonster, Nigel Farage said: “This is the worst possible start. Gavin Barwell is a staunch Remainer who abuses those who want to control immigration.”
