IF the are real then they are like gorillas. Different is that they have to adapt to the winters and cold climate. This would "reduce" the number of the group because of food sources. It would make since for them to be like Bears and not in Big groups.

National forests are not criss crossed with roads either, and much of the forest terrain in these areas definitely does not lend itself to roads.

Wilderness itself in the US is 5% of the area of the nation, but with the national forests, monuments and other public areas that has to be close to 30% of the country.
