No one can escape this law
Jesus said, ‘For everyman shall be salted by fire’. What is the connection between salt and fire? Fire is a symbol for the spirit, as is salt. Salt, like fire, burns. But fire exists in different forms and therefore produces different sorts of burning. Fire is synonymous with life, but it is also synonymous with suffering and death. Fire sustains life but also has the power to destroy it, and it destroys it utterly. The same is true of salt: though it is strongly connected to the origins of life, it also has the power to destroy life. Salt, like fire, can therefore bring death as it can bring life. Thus, when Jesus says, ‘Everyman shall be salted by fire’, it means that no one can escape salt and fire. But those who have welcomed the spirit in and worked with it will be salted by the fire of life, whereas those who have rebelled against the spirit will be salted by the fire of suffering and death. No one can escape this law.

Much has been said and written about initiations, because at different times and in different places on earth they have taken very different forms. The fact is that all initiations, past as well as present, wherever they take place, have only one goal: to unite spirit and matter. Yes, one goal only: the fusion of spirit and matter, of human beings and their Creator. And if the explanations and forms for reaching this unique goal are so varied and numerous, it is because the knowledge necessary to realise this fusion is infinite. Human beings must place all their means, all the knowledge they ceaselessly work to acquire, in the service of this one goal: to unite with the Divinity, to become one with the first Cause. So long as they seek something else, they will simply wander along paths that lead nowhere.

Anyone who knows how to study numbers soon discovers how meaningful they are, how alive and active. Consider the number 10, for example, which is the symbol of totality: it is composed of 1 and 0. But this 1 and this 0 must not simply be considered as adjacent figures; they must be joined together and set in motion. The figure 1 represents the spirit, the 0 represents matter, and the spirit penetrates matter to animate it, to vivify it. We can thus say that any act that contributes to the maintenance of life within us corresponds to the number 10. When you eat, you open your mouth – the 0, in order to introduce food – the 1, and this union produces energy. And what does it mean, to see ? It is the effect of light – the 1, striking the eye – the 0. It is the same phenomenon once again when sound strikes the ear. As for our head, which is spherical, it too is an 0, and it is into this 0 that the spirit must descend. As long as our head has not received the spirit, it is an 0 and produces nothing worthwhile. But the day it is visited by a ray from heaven, it gives birth to a divine child, and we become a 10. Until then we are merely an 0. You will say: ‘What kind of an interpretation is that?' Well, it's just that: an interpretation.

Everything that exists stems from the spirit and is animated by the spirit, because the spirit is the creative principle par excellence. But all is not spirit. Our body, for instance, possesses something of the spirit, but it is far from possessing all the powers and qualities of the spirit. It is down to us to see to it that our body becomes increasingly impregnated with the elements of the spirit. When we eat, for example, we must ensure that the spirit participates in this act, so that it may impregnate the food and so penetrate our own matter. Food contains life, but it does not yet possess the spirit. It is down to us, when we eat, to concentrate on the food we eat so that the spirit may intervene, because its presence will bring elements that are so new that everything within us will be transformed, embellished and revived.

The Creator has given his human creatures the mission of transforming and sublimating the substance of his creation. The food we eat, the air we breathe, all the matter that passes through us – we have the task of working on it all. What does this mean? It means we must strive to give a new dimension, a spiritual dimension, to all our actions. If we succeed, the spirits of light will acknowledge and appreciate us and choose to stay close by us, because we have understood the meaning of life. Each time we succeed in going beyond ourselves, in surpassing ourselves, in creating something greater than ourselves, we stamp matter with the seal of the spirit, thus fulfilling our task as sons and daughters of God.

"When Jesus says in 'The Lord's Prayer', 'Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven....' not only does he emphasise the connection between heaven and earth, but he teaches human beings that their task is to beautify, purify, and transform the earth, so that one day it becomes like heaven. You will say: 'But how? This is impossible!' Yes, it is possible. It is true that a spiritualist must always reach towards heaven, but once he has succeeded in reaching it, he must also remember to bring the light of heaven, the love, the power, and the purity of heaven, down into his head, his lungs, his stomach...into his entire body. After a few years of working in this way, he will succeed in realising within himself the union of heaven and earth, of spirit and matter. And once he has realised this union within himself, he can contribute to its realisation around him as well. "

Nowhere in man's investigations into nature do we find that the spirit seeks to rid itself of matter. On the contrary, we note that the spirit works on matter in order to make it evolve. Since the beginning of the world, the spirit has demonstrated its intention to make use of matter, to transform it, to spiritualise it, to make it as vibrant as light. If spirit were to get rid of matter, it could no longer manifest itself, for it can do so only through matter, which is its beloved wife. It is only ignorant human beings who urge them to divorce! So, distrust all those philosophies that try to separate spirit from matter. The only true philosophy teaches us that the spirit descends into matter in order to master it, vivify it, and manifest itself through it. Of course, it is a gigantic enterprise, but the spirit is never discouraged and endlessly returns to celebrate its union with matter.

Because human beings are a synopsis of creation - the microcosm, created in the image of the macrocosm - they are the depository of all the memory of the world and the archives of the universe are held in them. These archives are also represented symbolically in the Sephirothic Tree by the sephirah Daath*, Knowledge. According to the Cabbala, Daath is the original matter, the primordial matter which, in the beginning, God fertilized by letting a breath pass over it. Because it is the substance of Creation, matter is capable of holding the memory. And the spirit awakens this memory by touching lightly upon the matter like a breath of wind rings the strings of an Æolian harp.

Spirit and matter… This is an endless question, since spirit and matter appear in many different forms: as masculine and feminine, positive and negative, emissive and receptive, heaven and earth. Nothing is more important than these two principles – the masculine and the feminine. But you have to understand their respective places and roles so as not to favour one over the other. Humans always tend to go to extremes: either they focus only on the spirit and neglect matter, or they focus on matter and leave out the spirit. This is what is happening today, when so many people are in the grip of matter without ever seeking to bring the spirit into it. And so, matter remains inert, lifeless, and eventually it engulfs them. It is because the spirit is alive in them and animating their matter that men and women can be so alive and expressive. And to prove it: when a human being’s spirit departs at death, all that remains is to bury them. It is always the spirit acting through matter that brings it to life. But without matter, spirit is unable to manifest.

The relationship between good and evil is identical to that which exists between spirit and matter. Just as the spirit needs matter in order to express itself, so good needs evil, otherwise it will fall asleep; there is nothing to stimulate it. Evil provokes good, and then good is projected onto the substance of evil as though onto a screen. It’s thanks to evil that good is what it is; without evil we would have no knowledge of good. If humans wish to destroy evil, good will also be destroyed. In some cases, evil can even be said to be the root of good. Of course, that doesn’t mean we should favour evil; it doesn’t need any favours, it is strong enough as it is. We only need to know it is unavoidable and learn to use it. You cannot evolve, you cannot become a higher being, if you do not encounter evil in the form of obstacles and ordeals. So, be happy that you will always be stimulated, you will always be inspired and full of life, because evil will always be there: there will always be things to annoy you, there will always be flies, wasps, snakes and wicked people, and it is up to you to use them to the good.

"It is a mistake to think that spirit and matter are in opposition, for matter is a condensation of spirit. And on this matter which came from it, spirit works to bring forth innumerable forms of life. Spirit and matter are two aspects of God himself. Matter is as sacred and holy as spirit because it is the daughter of spirit. When Genesis tells us that God created Adam and Eve, it is a way of expressing that he created spirit and matter. He created Adam (spirit), and from Adam’s rib he fashioned Eve (matter). For the initiates who possess true knowledge, matter could not have appeared out of nothing. It originated in spirit, it emanated from spirit, and it is the result of the work of God himself. "

"Let us consider the human body for a moment: it could be compared to a building, the framework being the skeletal system, which in nature corresponds to the mineral world and which, similarly, acts as material support. The muscles are attached to the bones, in the same way that vegetation is attached to the soil. The circulatory system, with its arteries and veins, corresponds to the rivers, waterways and lakes, because water is the earth's blood that feeds all the vegetation. The respiratory system corresponds to the air. And finally the nervous system corresponds to the sun, upon which the proper functioning of the entire organism is based. It is not the skeletal system that controls, but the nervous system, which is the most subtle and the most sophisticated. From this we can draw the philosophical conclusion that it is not matter but the spirit that we should consider the most important. "

"Spirituality is founded on the laws governing man’s psychic life. Scientists must recognize this domain and understand that since the spiritual life rests on laws, there exists a science of the spiritual life. I invite them, therefore, to broaden their field of investigation: gradually they will come to see that their own discoveries actually underline the veracity of the Teaching of the initiates. To the extent that they pit the physical world against the spiritual world, to the extent that they separate the two, scientific advances of any kind will leave them dissatisfied, because these advances remain exterior to them. These advances will of course enable them to manipulate matter, but they can have every means of manipulating matter and yet feel empty, because scientific and technological discoveries do not nourish the soul and spirit. Spiritual work is undoubtedly a long-term endeavour, the results of which are slow to manifest. But those who set out to do this work link themselves each day to the world of principles. They find meaning, and this meaning fulfils them."

"We are in the habit of separating the physical plane from the spiritual plane, but the truth is that there is no separation, no division between the two. There is a continuous progression from the physical plane to the etheric plane and beyond this, to the astral, mental, causal, buddhic and atmic planes. This progression takes place through the intermediary of centres and organs on the subtle plane which are, in a sense, extensions of the organs and centres on the physical plane. We can consider these subtle centres (the solar plexus, the hara centre, the aura, the chakras) to be transformers which enable human beings to live harmoniously in the physical and spiritual realms at the same time, because there is a continuous coming and going between them. This is true spiritual alchemy: the continuous transformation of raw matter into fluidic, etheric and spiritual matter, and conversely, the diffusion of this spiritual matter within the physical body, which is then invigorated, animated and regenerated as a result."

"Schematically it can be said that the human being consists of a material principle, the physical body, and a subtle principle, the spirit. But as the history of religion reveals, people have rarely understood what place they should accord to each. For some, only the spirit mattered, and they neglected their body to the point that they eventually wasted away. But, if the body is despicable to this extent, and only the spirit counts, why does man come down to earth? God should keep him on high, in the ethereal regions of space. If he descends to incarnate on earth, it means he has to work to do there with his body. The mission of the spirit is to take on a physical body and come down to work on the earth, to impregnate the earth with its qualities, thereby transforming it into a magnificent garden where God and his angels will come to walk. When Jesus said: ‘Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven’, he too was praying that the splendours of the spirit incarnate in matter. "

"Observe yourself and notice that you always tend to identify with your physical body: you act as though its needs, its satisfactions and dissatisfactions were your needs, satisfactions and dissatisfactions. Your physical body is nothing more than your vehicle. Because human beings confuse themselves with what they are not, they have such difficulty finding themselves, and they put themselves in jeopardy. The physical body is perishable, and, if you identify with it, you perish with it. Whereas, if you identify with your immortal spirit, you become a spark, a flame; you free yourself from your earthly weight and succeed in overcoming all difficulties. Human beings do themselves a great deal of harm by identifying with matter, which is corruptible and ephemeral, instead of identifying with the spirit, which is unchanging and eternal. The physical body is only an instrument which has been given to us so we can live on earth, while our spirit, which leaves the body at the moment of death, continues its journey in the infinite."

"Human beings have a body: they live with it, they look after it, they feed it, wash it, clothe it, and even make it up! But do they ever bother to decipher what this body wants to convey to them with its limbs and organs? Some, perhaps, but so few! Well, in this body, which only functions properly because it is animated by the spirit, they must read a lesson: how God and Nature envisioned things by placing the body under the authority of the spirit. May this lesson inspire them in the conduct of their lives, which is to say, may they place everything that is material and transitory at the service of the essential. Material and transitory things will always play a role in our lives and can even be very useful, but only if we have learned to put them at the service of that which is essential: the spirit."

"Whatever you manage to achieve in your life, nothing will ever equal your accomplishments in the spiritual realm. In the spiritual life you work with different values, which bring with them riches of a different kind. Imagine a gold digger who is busy sifting sand in a river: he may find gold, of course, and even a lot of it, but his enterprise is risky. Then, imagine an alchemist next to him: for years and years he works day and night to find the philosopher’s stone, and he appears to be working in vain. In reality, if he always works according to the rules, he will eventually find it, and then he can transform mountains of base metal into gold. Compared to this, what has the gold digger gained? I do not cite these two examples to encourage you to look for the philosopher’s stone in the hope of transforming metals into gold. Not only will your attempts to find it fail, but you will also run the risk of ruining yourself. By means of these two examples, I simply want to help you understand the difference between ordinary and spiritual work."

What happens when salt loses its saltiness?

Which burns first then, the flesh or the spirit?

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
