Report: Toddler hospitalized after contracting infection from father's smallpox vaccination

CHICAGO A two-year-old Indiana boy reportedly has contracted a rare, life-threatening infection from his father's smallpox vaccination.
The Chicago Tribune says the boy's mother is also being treated for the infection.The father is a soldier who received the vaccination before being deployed overseas. Fears of bioterrorism prompted the military to begin smallpox vaccinations five years ago.According to the newspaper, the boy developed a virulent rash over 80 percent of his body after coming in contact with his father. Doctors say the boy is not suffering from smallpox but a related virus.Doctors say the child suffered from eczema, which is a known risk factor for the infection.The condition hasn't been reported since at least 1990, when the military ended a previous smallpox vaccination program.The boy and his mother are being treated in a specially ventilated room at a Chicago hospital.
