Rosh Hashanah Delayed? UPDATE: THE NEW MOON HAS BEEN CONFIRMED IN JERUSALEM. Pg4 ROSH HOSHANAH HAS BEGUN FOR 48 HOURS
Has the New Moon been spotted over Jerusalem by two witnesses? I don't believe it would have been possible. The Sun Set at the same direction as the Moon was to set making it impossible to see the New Moon and the Moon set throughout the entire night until tomorrow morning where it is to rise 3 minutes before Sunrise.

How long will it take before the moon will actually be able to be seen?

I think it might take quite a while. Anybody have an answer?

Truly the Rosh Hashanah is the Day that NO MAN KNOWETH!

Re: Rosh Hashanah Delayed? UPDATE: THE NEW MOON HAS BEEN CONFIRMED IN JERUSALEM. Pg4 ROSH HOSHANAH HAS BEGUN FOR 48 HOURS
The first potential window to sight the new moon will be Thursday 9/21 before 19:36 or moonset, which would make Friday 9/22 also the day of the fall equinox the feast of Trumpets and the first day of 5778. If it is not sighted 9/21 and is sighted 9/22 then 9/23 will be day 1 and regardless it will be the first sabbath of 5778

THIS

The Rabbis messed with the calendar to keep Rosh Hashanah from ever falling on a Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday but this was not God's direction.
The new moon should be spotted tomorrow in Jerusalem.

Yes tonight it is too close. Of course the charts are only predictions and we must look up (weather permitting, etc)

Isnt the new moon when it goes totally dark and the new month a couple days later when the first sliver of the moon comes into sight?

Yep. This is where it always gets confusing for me when people on the west coast are able to see it before anybody in Jerusalem. Ideally, it's probably best to default to Jerusalem time, but if you don't have internet on a pacific island, then go with what you can see yourself.

We defer to Jerusalem for sighting as well. Granted, there may come a day when we can't know from there, and if that's the case, we have to go by what we see. But we look narrowly for the sliver and the lowest percentage we've ever been able to see is 3%. Thursday it will be 4% so we're thinking Yom Teruah will begin Thursday at sundown.

The problem is we are not 100% how they determined the new moon. It was possible to calculate it even in David's time so we do not know if it required witnesses or not since there is no scripture stating how to determine the new moon.

Two reliable witness reported to the Sanhedrin back in the day. Nowadays there are reliable and reputable witness in Jerusalem that do report when the New Moon is sighted.

In the past the month would be set by the Sanhedrin if that was the case. Even in the days of antiquity people knew the lunar cycle. So my guess would they would rule the day based off the annual lunar cycles of that year. Nowadays there might be a regulatory body in Orthodoxy that could make the determination. I just don't know.
