The Sun Set at the same direction as the Moon was to set making it impossible to see the New Moon and the Moon set throughout the entire night until tomorrow morning where it is to rise 3 minutes before Sunrise. Quoting: TidesofTruth How long will it take before the moon will actually be able to be seen? I think it might take quite a while. Anybody have an answer? Pg4 ROSH HOSHANAH HAS BEGUN FOR 48 HOURS this thread seems correct, I can't find one report of a new moon sighting over Israel. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72664510 WAY too close to be seen at sunset in Jerusalem today. Only place it might be seen 9/20 is on Pacific islands west of Hawaii. Yep. This is where it always gets confusing for me when people on the west coast are able to see it before anybody in Jerusalem. Ideally, it's probably best to default to Jerusalem time, but if you don't have internet on a pacific island, then go with what you can see yourself. |

Granted, there may come a day when we can't know from there, and if that's the case, we have to go by what we see. But we look narrowly for the sliver and the lowest percentage we've ever been able to see is 3%. Thursday it will be 4% so we're thinking Yom Teruah will begin Thursday at sundown. Two reliable witness reported to the Sanhedrin back in the day. Nowadays there are reliable and reputable witness in Jerusalem that do report when the New Moon is sighted. Torah calendar dot com is a very reliable source. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9473931 In the past the month would be set by the Sanhedrin if that was the case. Even in the days of antiquity people knew the lunar cycle. So my guess would they would rule the day based off the annual lunar cycles of that year. Nowadays there might be a regulatory body in Orthodoxy that could make the determination. I just don't know. |
