question about fire
OK, water freezes at a certain temperature and boils at a certain temperature. is there a certain temperature at which dry grass, trees, paper, etc will automatically combust? can it get hot enough outside for fires to start automaticly? when you rub two sticks together, how hot does it have to get at the point of friction for a fire to start?

A) Yes, it's called the flash point.

B) Not at all likely.

Re: question about fire
There is a thing called spontaneous combustion - supposedly even people have spontaneously combusted!

Ever hear of fahrenheit 451?
"And though I believe in the ineffable glory of God, and though I might have experienced the undeniable reality of the Deity, and though I may know the secrets of the ages, these do not fulfill the Love in my heart. But to Change and Be and Do and dissolve both the subject of my person and the object of my God into the fluency of Empirical Providence. The Way, the Truth, and the Life."

451 degrees is the flash point of regular paper.

Re: question about fire
most fires are started by dry thunderstorms when lightning strikes dried vegetation .. it's unlikely anything could just spontaneously combust. Just think of how much effort it took when you were a kid to start stuff on fire with a magnifying glass....

I've got a huge magnifying glass that is meant to enlarge TV sets... cheap plastic about 3 feet by 2 feet.. now that thing can focus the sun in such a way that I can start a fire in a matter of seconds in the dead of winter by focusing the sunlight on grass, paper, etc.

Re: question about fire
I lived on an island and during the dry hot season the bamboo would rub against each other in the breeze and start fires.

where i lived for ten years (at the mediteranean coast), every summer there are several fires (also bigtime fires)with no known cause
