I got a letter in the mail saying that there will be a lien placed against all my real estate/personal property unless I pay $500 past child support.

I was recently fired from my job and have had trouble getting a new job. They don't seem to care though, they just want the money.

The thing is though, I just don't have any $ right now, no income or anything. I do support my children though and make sure they do have what they need when they are over at my house, which is about half the time. I guess I just don't understand why I have to pay when I don't get money for support when the kids are at my house. It just doesn't seem fair.

The support order was to be enforced if the mother is getting state benefits. She is no longer getting the benefits from the state, so does that mean i am off the hook? And I don't mean off the hook to support my children, but by legal means because I do care for the children half time, it's just that placement has been given to the mother for some reason. I never got to contest it, it seems like placement was given without me being able to contest it.



They cannot seize for 500.00, it has to be more than that 5,000.00 or so ...and they have to run a discovery to see if you infact have any assets that can be liquidated....this in extreme cases.


They cannot take your car, they cannot take your home, they can only take assets or items such a yaght or xtra land....

example 1: you own 1 home and 1 car necessary to live and support yourself

Exapmple 2 : You own 2 homes and 2 cars , as an individual, they lein 1 car and 1 home.


..the state will just take your taxes as first course of action.....Prperty seizure is last resort......

No, you are not off the hook....the state wants their money .....and will enforce current support for her ....and with thier 500.00 ....once the state gets thier money back....she can close the case if she wishes...and stop collecting on current support....if you are not working ..they can issue hardship and ask a minimal monthly amount

The state can issue a capias which is an arrest warrent for Child support. Inturn your bail amount can be set at 10-15% of the amount due ...then your on on CS probabtion and will have to pay somthing every month, and if defaulted go back to jail.

500.00 however, will not provoke these extreme actions, considering that the state many times will write off a balance off 175.00 or less. Just call them and set up a payment plan for like 50.00 a month....but word of advice ......dont avoid the agency they can and will ruin your life, with her help of course.

Chances are ...she did not tell them she recives any help from you, in order to receive benefits.

from now on, do not give her money directly, pay it through SDU ( child support payment system), for record. It will save your ass. NEVER do a direct pay ..if she gets mad at you and decides to try to come after you ...all the help you are providing now won't mean shit, she could come back and say you owe 5 years of arrearages ...then it's your word against hers.
