Astronomers in NJ, can you answer this question about the moon?
According to all the charts I looked at tonight, it was supposed to be a cresent 1st quarter moon, with the cresent to the right side being illuminated(in NJ skies).

At approx. 9:15 PM(EST) I saw the moon in the western sky, seeming to be setting, with about 1/4 to 1/3 of the bottom of the moon illuminated. I've never noticed this before.
Is there a particular reason the bottom was illuminated instead of 1/4 of the right side?

Just curious if this was normal, or an anomoly?
I know that there is supposed to be an eclipse around the 20th.
John 3:16 (Amplified Bible)
“For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ([a]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions;the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences-Proverbs22:3

Yeah, my husband and I were talking about that. We're in California and the moon was "smiling" at us, last night. (We haven't been outside, tonight.)

Moon phase charts always show the partial moons on the left and right sides, never top and bottom. How can people not see this?

We've been wondering if the Earth has already tilted almost 90º.

They always show the half/quarter moons rightside up. That's the way it appears at midnight (or would appear at midnight.

If that happened, the stars would be sideways, too. Constellations out of place, sun rising in the north and setting in the south, etc. Not happening.

What we are seeing is the result of the moon's orbit. It wobbles. That's why we don't have a solar or lunar eclipse at every new or full moon.

Saw the same thing here in NY. Moon was smiling at me. Reminded me of the "Dreamworks Pictures" logo, hehe.

I watch for the sighting of the new moon. This month is was supposed to be February 7 but wasn't sighted until 8. That makes this past lunar month from sightings 31 days long.

And weren't we supposed to have some eclipese around this time?

The lit side of the crescent always points towards the sun since that's where its light comes from. Unless the sun was above the horizon, it would be impossible for a crescent moon to point to the "right". If the sun has already set and is below the horizon, the lit side of the crescent will point down.

Many printed charts always show a crescent moon as pointing right or left. It's actual orientation in the sky will depend on where the sun is.

In Canada last nite on the news, the 1st quarter was bright, however just to the right was a 'reflection' not as bright as you'd expect in a LARGER shape another 'object.' AND the picture had a gargoyle extended from a building to the left, and this 'object' rested on it's back. Canadians are a sneaky bunch .. . of course I'm looking for it. It was on the evening news in the first five. Just look for a gargoyle, it may have been a reflection, however it was LARGER than the moon. A nice shot either way! Heads Up!

We need an emoticon 'looking up' eh?

Well I found the CBC Sunday nite news thingy, and of course the image was located on the fed was the promo lead, not the actual vid that they've archived, CRAP!

Seriously, the pic, real or not, was very interesting. I remember thinking that that was an awfully l o n g gargoyle extending from the building, and the positioning looked as if it was drinking/eating out of the 'bowl' created by the moons 1st quarter position, aside from the LARGER objects position ~ resting on the back/neck/head area of the gargoyle. Some sumpthing strange, really .

FFS...

You do realize that the 'dark' part of the moon is the shadow of Earth, right?

Bisect the crescent and extend the line...It points directly at the position of the sun in space...

It 'swings' round as it goes across the sky always pointing at the sun...

Almost right. The dark part of the moon is the moon's shadow, the part the sun isn't shining on. That "bisect the crescent" thing thing is cool!
