I had always perceived that weakness. Interesting, he was in that age group of people that helped me most in life. To this day three of my most respected friends are in that age group, one of them, an old welder, no longer knows my name, but greets me like family when I check in on him. |

Harry seems to think that if he'd died 42 years ago, it'd be breaking. Well, in a way, it would . . . "Gordon Lightfoot died 42 years ago, and they're just now telling us about it. His big hits were all from the '70s. He was active from the early-ish '60s 'til now. I don't feel like looking it up right now, but I wonder if anyone's ever tried to do a cover version of any of his songs. I've never heard one. Once we associate a song with his voice, it'd be hard to accept a substitute. I've heard another recording of "Edmund Fitzgerald", not the one I've heard 1000 times (minimum) on the radio. Gordon was singing it, possibly recorded at a live performance, and neither his voice or the "production values" matched (or could match) the original release. |

Probably the best song ever written. No joke. RIP Gordon. You reached my heart many years ago and there will always remain. Quoting: Walter Brennan's Hat This and "Sundown"....but "If You Could Read My Mind" is hauntingly beautiful I loved all his songs even before he registered in my world I was taken by Ribbon of Darkness. Marty Robbins. |

Let their designs become hardened, so that whatever they have conspired shall return upon their own heads. For they have devised a plan, but it was not for them. They prepared themselves maliciously, but they were found to be impotent. Indeed my confidence is upon the Lord, and I will not fear. |

There's an elvis version too but it's somehow not allowed to be shared. Last Edited by guitar ace on 05/02/2023 04:21 AM |

I guess I was more concerned about someone having dared to render their interpretation of one of Gordon's songs that is his and his alone. Like "Sundown". And sure enough, a bunch of people have tried. It's a great song, and they need something to fill an album with. Easier to buy permission than to write your own. But the song is his, literally and metaphorically. |

I was literally being held hostage by a musician that was famous for playing with huge country stars such as Sammi Smith ("Help Me Make It Through the Night") and was on many USO tours throughout the Vietnam Era. Made him go crazy. When 'Sundown' came out in 1974, I wrote down the lyrics and told my abuser that I just wrote this song - what do you think? He read the lyrics and said I was a brilliant songwriter - so no beatings that night, until he found out later that I did not, in fact, write the song. So thanks Gordon for that one evening of peace. |
