Kindergarten teacher allows students to 'vote' autistic boy out of classroom
[link to www.kare11.com]

A Port St. Lucie, Florida mother says her five-year-old special needs son was voted out of his classroom by his peers at the behest of the teacher.

Five-year-old Alex Barton will be starting his summer vacation early.

His mother doesn't want him to to return to school after what allegedly happened in class at Morningside Elementary Wednesday afternoon.

"I'll never be able to send him to school again without worrying if something is going to happen," said Melissa Barton.

She admits he's had behavior problems, and can be difficult at times, and says he's undergoing tests to determine if he suffers from autism and other disorders.

Barton claims a Wednesday incident pushed the lines of discipline into the realm of abuse.

"She took him and stood him in front of his classmates this week, asked every single child to tell Alex why we don't like him, in his words, tell Alex why we hate him," she explained.

After having each child ridicule the boy, she says the teacher continued belittling him.

"Then they had a vote on if he deserved to stay in the class or not," said Barton.

Like a twisted reality show, Barton says in a 14-2 vote, his classmates voted the five-year-old out of the classroom.

"I never thought she would subject my child to such mental abuse," she said.

Barton filed complaints with the Department of Children and Families and police.

After conferring with the State Attorney's office, police found no grounds for charges, but the school district is investigating the incident and these teaching practices.

Barton suspects other students may have suffered as well.

"If other parents who have this teacher or have had this teacher, come forward talk to your kids because this is wrong," Barton said.

The St. Lucie County school district is investigating the incident and released a statement Tuesday morning that reads:

"Ms. Portillo (the teacher) has been reassigned outside of the classroom at the district offices until any further action may be determined."

The risk far outweighs any benefit as the risk will vary from child to child.

There is a wonderful family-friendly
fantasy movie about a boy with autism.

Perhaps if teachers and students saw
movies like this one, instead of ugly
perverted violent TV, movies and video
games, they would view the world and
it's diversity much differently.

I can't believe they found no grounds to FIRE THE BITCH! I don't believe special needs should be mainstreamed. It'd too demeaning to them and too much of a challenge to the herd/moron mentality!

Why wasn't he in an appropriate class environment (for his mental handicap) to begin with?

Public schools are fucked up places.
Homeschool is the answer. And no - socialization is no longer a problem. Many families now homeschool and create their own social groups.

I think it's great that the little bastard got voted out. It's a valuable life lesson for him. Because for all of his life, he will, in one way or another, be "voted out" of everything.

And the assholes who now express outrage and indignation about this story are the ones who happily make life Hell for anyone and everyone they can.

People love to tell each other "People are basically good." That's a lie, of course. People are basically deeply, devotedly, profoundly evil. And there's nothing they love better than tormenting the innocent.

What's wrong about that?

Autistic children should be taught in special class for autistic children by trained personal.

I agree about public schools. Private (non-religious) or some home schooling is much better. Home schooling won't be around much longer because 1 student costs the state 8-10K per year. Nobody gives a fuck about anything anymore. They're begging for fascism. They're on their fucking knees dying for it.

Unfortunately, the majority of them are mainstreamed, because of a very high I.Q. I have one and was never a problem, except he would over-focus and not hear the teacher when he was absorbed with a book. He wouldn't even know when they'd gone on to the next lesson. Of course, he was considered odd for it. I yanked him out after fourth grade and homeschooled my special one. He has Asperger's Syndrome and he's adorable. The regular classroom is too stressful and torture for them. They need to have their own school to study what they are interested in. Parents are going through hell!

Whose fault is it that he's autistic? 99% probability that he was ok before the immunization shots.

That is not his fault.

But it is not fault of the kids or the teacher either.

Special cases require special treatment.

Case closed.

It is the fault of the teacher to demean. She is a person in a position that could help the family or steer them to professionals that can help. She didn't help; only harmed.

Obviously, he isn't low functioning autistic. It's probably Aspergers. Where should they be put? They have very high I.Q.'s.

"twisted reality show"

Only more proof that the human species is an absolute, abject, utter failure and deserves extinction.

Throughout the Cosmos, ours in the only known species that ridicules and murders it's own, for no good reason.

I long for doom and destruction. Put us humans out of our misery.

Granted the way the teacher handled it was very inappropriate, IMO. One has to consider if his behavioral issues were endangering or harming the other children. This should be the topmost priority, but the matter should have been handled by, as many have said, removing him from the typical classroom environment and placing him within a special ed program. It is just sad all the way around.

Re: Kindergarten teacher allows students to 'vote' autistic boy out of classroom
I am shocked by how many people have posted in agreement with what the teacher did. I am a student observing in a school district that has a lot of children with special needs. The majority of them are still in a normal classroom with their peers, but receive Occupational Therapy and special education.

I am working with one child who has Down Syndrome and 2 with a form of Autism. Of these 3 children only 1 is not in the classroom most of the day. Yes their curriculum has been modified to meet the needs of their disability, but what does pulling them completely from a school tell your child, other parents or teachers...

That your child isn't good enough to be with others their age? That people will always treat them like this if they don't seek help and get the support they need? That you can be easily manipulated into pulling your child from any activity if they "pick on them"? That you aren't willing to fight for your child to have the same rights as other children? That you aren't willing to make the school district make changes about how much special education/selected services children with disabilities are receiving at that school?

I think there are more factors to look at than pointing fingers. Maybe look into a school district that offers additional services that your child will benefit from or that has more funding to help with children with disabilities. I know this isn't easy, but when it comes to children... they are what we teach them.

I agree that what the teacher did was wrong and unethical. No child should ever be subjected to something like this from the one who is suppose to be helping them learn day in and day out. But what are other parents telling their children who are in that class room? Are they telling them this was okay or to forget about it? That is just as morally wrong to be teaching children those concepts as well.
