Anonymous Coward User ID: 46403503 United States 10/22/2023 10:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Went to do my weekly sunday morning grocery shopping and noticed the self checkouts are now detecting unscanned items. Went to scan some packaged tomatoes and the UPC was kinda blurry like the ink had smudged. I tried to scan it three times and it wouldn't recognize the item. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 86012603 I put it aside, after thinking about just putting it in the bag cause I was in a hurry, however a prompt came up on the screen that said an 'unscanned item was detected'. And then it says 'an associate will be there shortly' and I am now unable to move forward with the transaction. I wait for the dothead to come over and scan her smartphone and notice on the screen there's an overhead video of me trying to scan the tomatoes three times. Thankfully I didn't put it in the bag. She leaves and about 5 items later the same prompt comes on the screen for 'unscanned item detected'. However this time the item was scanned and on the receipt. Once again I can no longer move forward with the transaction. She comes over minutes later, scans her phone and I once again see the overhead video of me scanning the item. What a total PITA, I guess this is where we're headed now treating everyone like a criminal. I'm done with this self checkout bullshit, for the extra time I spent waiting for an associate to override the error message twice I could've just waited in the line with an actual cashier. And its not like they're giving me a discount for doing their job of scanning and bagging the groceries anyway. I really need to stop shopping at Walmart. Because most everyone are criminals, you can’t tempt people without expecting them to do wrong |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80854607 United States 10/22/2023 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wonder how many people will just copy a upc code for tomatoes and tape it to a TV? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84236616 they catch stuff like that. You would have to have exact weight and size of the tomatoes so obviously the tv would throw the system off. And when you hit skip bagging it auto alerts the goons sitting in the office watching and they look at what you are doing. |

And then 25% of them are talking on their cellphone while they check out and they are about 200% slower. a White Male only self-checkout line could service so many more people efficiently |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84189022 yes there are scanners and your knee level and elsewhere that detect these. Look next time you go. Scanners are in front of your lower legs |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85932284 If a biz wants my money, it needs to woo me, with customer service. I have options. They don't. it is not just walmart. I have 3 grocery chains here Kroger, Publix and Lidl - all heavy push to self checkout only. i.e. Lidl 1 lane only with a person checking people out. 6 self checkout. |

My local Wally World has those self checkout stations too. I hate them. I only buy stuff that I can just scan and go. I never buy produce or anything else you have to weigh and look up a code. I'd rather go to regular grocery store for those items. |

I will pay a little extra a normal grocery store so I do not have to do that. It's really more of a mild protest against them than anything else. I hate having to do all that crap when I'm the customer. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 86445250 United States 10/22/2023 10:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Walmarts around here have one, maybe two registers open, with lines around the block. (I assume because no cashiers available) If you want to WAIT, get in line. They are forcing people to check themselves out. (I remember when filling stations were full service, because as a kid I worked at one) When "SELF-SERVE" began people were throwing a fit. It's just another example of the race to the BOTTOM. I don't know if it's ENTROPY or what but since I was born (1950) I've watched EVERYTHING go down the drain except technology, which was SUPPOSED to make things better, but I don't see that either. We were healthy active kids, playing baseball, football, riding bikes... TODAY, kids sit like zombies on their asses playing with iPhones and other mobile devices. Probably have coronaries before they're 30. |
