I Need Help. I have a son about to enter college. What is the best career choice for him these days?

Pops, consider his ambitions too! What does he like and what are his interests? Math, science, or blah blah english, art history, philosophy??

A Masters in either Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering is always a safe bet. The programming and IT fields are pretty full.
Make sure any engineering degree is ABET accredited.

tell him to get into a trade school, before they all go to the immigrants. pipefitters, welders, ironeworkers are always needed, as well as electricians and plumbers.

Stay away from IT, and don´t bother with a law degree. I would say nursing!

Are we talking at least a Bachelor´s degree? If so, much of his work during the first 2 years will be general education courses that are required for everything. He can use this time to take some electives and explore several areas that he might be interested in. The college career center should be helpful to him as well.

Pops, mechanical is a much safer bet than electrical, not sure about chemical. How good is your son in science? Gogeta mentioned a ´Masters,´ how about a B.S. first?? And if $$ is a problem, Junior College and transfer to a major university is a cheaper alternative.

Humanities or Philosophy

The first year of college is an intense period of adjustment for your teen. They will be integrating all kinds of new life skills as well as a higher degree of personal responsibility into their life. Why preemptively pigeon hole them into a career choice? The first years of college are always about general requirements anyway. Why don´t you relax and see what direction they want to go in a year or so.

Lawyers will be needed in the nwo.

Engineering

Is where he should look, but only if he can tie his own shoes. I am not being rude but a lot go to school get degrees and cant do the job.
I DO NOT have a degree but this is what I do.

International Relations. Have him be a career diplomat, it´s one of the best jobs around. And as long as there´s a US government, they´ll have jobs.

The reason I said Masters is in todays jobmarket, without one, you are looking at a major difference in posistion and salary. We employ about 50 people, out of those 50, we have around 6 PHD´s, and about 30 Masters.

Just helping him plan ahead. Once getting out, it is horribly hard getting that Masters while working full time in a career.

Okay, since there is most likely a draft coming mid-year, maybe an education overseas.

Barring that, I´d stay away from most high-tech, as it´s being exported.

Biotech *might* be okay. Alternative medical would be good too (chiropractic, naturopath, etc.)

A trade would be good, as you can´t export a job that requires a warm body present.

Dentist, electrician, air-conditioning -- all good areas.

Software, computer stuff, IT -- all bad. There will be waaaay too much competition for too few jobs.

All this IMHO, of course.

Computer Science. All those dot com companies are just throwing money and stock options at people. There is no end in sight.

Pops, it is my impression the outsourcing is in lower to mid-level IT more than anything else. Engineering, as gogeta suggested, seems sound advise. Electrical engineers are not as needed now as they were 20 years ago when I was in headhunting, check Mechanical & Chemical aspects, either should be reasonably sound. Hell, if he is so worried about outsourcing, then tell him to save you the $$ and not go at all, and go the trades route. That would be a big mistake from white/blue collar. The trades you can make decent $$, but there are far too many Eastern Europeans filling in those slots at much le$$ than the Union wage.

Don´t believe anybody.

At 19 years old I was half way done, and he is not in college yet?
