Mature users: Do you remember the Cold War? Does this feel like that all over again? | |
Sireen-reborn User ID: 472239 United States 08/19/2008 10:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was just discussing this with the bfriend last night! I told him with all the talk of Nuclear warfare on GLP, that it reminded me of those days in Jr High school where we had those 'drills' in case we were bombed.... like hiding under our desks would really help....it was that whole, false security thing! anything after 'but' is bullshit! Nothing Is True User ID: 486416 United Kingdom 08/19/2008 10:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This feels a little 'warmer' than the last one IMHO. Do you mind if I side-track this a bit, Max? ..Does anybody else remember that during the last cold war, the BBC used to cite Pravda as one of their sources? Was Pravda more 'respectable' back then? Thanks. Everything is permitted.. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 189801 United States 08/19/2008 10:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | MM, I have had a healthy fear of the red bear my entire life (50 years), thanks to the conditioning of my youth. This feels just like that, only worse. The brazen nature of Russia's incursion into Georgia, failing to uphold ceasefire agreements and otherwise thumbing their nose at the world leads me to believe they are a power rising, and not afraid to wield it. I hope my country will not make any strategic mistakes in the coming time. |

Literally minutes away from destruction due to malfunctions in our computers! anything after 'but' is bullshit! Anonymous Coward User ID: 454051 United States 08/19/2008 10:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sireen I was in grade school and we would do the drills under the desks. I was living in upstate New York, and they actually had the citywide sirens that would go off and everybody would have to leave the streets and go shelter in buildings. I remember that frightening me very much since I was so young. I always thought that bombs would be dropping on us soon. However, this time it seems more ominous. I just don't see Russia backing down, and our nuclear capabilities have greatly increased, making it entirely possible that a nuclear attack could take place at any time. Adding to the fray is the fact that many small countries, and large such as China have progressed and developed their own weapons. You can be sure all will be taking sides and joining in. The lines are blurred this time between the aggressors and the peace-makers. Somehow the United States, under George Bush, has lost it's sense of benevolence. I see many that have lost the sense of patriotism also. During the Cold War I don't ever remember one person siding in with the USSR, but you see many in our own country taking the side of Russia. |

Darkman User ID: 458021 United States 08/19/2008 10:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think it feels much the same. But the US has much more accurate missiles (anti-tank stuff) now and practice using them. I think that makes Russia VERY nervous because they know that their tanks are no match for our missiles and smart bombs. All they really have against us are nukes. So that makes it more unstable imo. But much the same because I know everything could end in a moment. It's a surreal feeling that I haven't felt in a long time. |
Sireen-reborn User ID: 472239 United States 08/19/2008 10:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The manipulations that take place were unknown and people were happier and more hopeful. Now, we've welcomed into this country many more outsiders, more sympathizers to other nations and less tolerant of ours. IMHO, I truely cannot foresee nuclear exchange between our nations. It will escalate to a WWIII long before the threat of nukes will be played out. anything after 'but' is bullshit! Nothing Is True User ID: 486416 United Kingdom 08/19/2008 10:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not really, I think there was a lot more fear then of whether or not the USSR could be beat conventionaly. Sireen-reborn User ID: 472239 United States 08/19/2008 11:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Another point to consider is our age now. Back then, we were children, we believed only our parents, teachers and didn't care about news or global events. Everything was focused on the here and now of our individual worlds. Yes, we feared but we never truely understood those fears. NOW we are older...our interests have changed dramatically to more important, less immediate matters. Due to our new found interests, we find ourselves actively seeking information... we look for the bad news...look for the worse case scenerios, look for things to escalate. It's so much easier to see faults and hate then it is to focus on the good things we still have in aabundace around us. anything after 'but' is bullshit! Anonymous Coward User ID: 487465 Netherlands 08/19/2008 11:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Today, we are not blinded by that kind of propaganda. Thank God for the internet! There is new leadership in Russia, not so ready to accept a false friendship with the US. With Putin at the helm, brutal communism is a thing of the past, which has enabled Russia to move forward in every aspect of upgrading the internal and external needs of its nation. So, yes, there is a difference. A big difference. The thing we feared, communism, is the same the US gov't has foisted on us through the Patriot Act, and we have become the impoverished nation. Hmmmmm. . |

Quoting: An Ominous Coward (Howard)I agree. Russia wasn't "defeated." They ran out of money. But after Russia's process of nationalizing energy companies, they are flush with cash. So, they're awake now. Rest is over. |
GraftedPromise U$ofA User ID: 487527 United States 08/19/2008 11:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Different imo. We have so much more acces to Quoting: red 482140info, then we had back then. Also things seems to be speeding up faster. Yep ... now there is Satellite TV/CNN, cell-phones, internet, etc. ... certainly possible to "black-out" events BUT we generally then know things are happening. So in some ways it is less of the "unkown" than before. We also have been living without and nuclear event drills that the threat seems less real. Those Civil Defense drills put the fear into you!! Not so now. Drills ... ? ... what drills? Don't have civil defense shelters anymore ... do we? |

meroj User ID: 439530 United States 08/19/2008 11:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I never bought that the cold war was ever over. I see a more precarious world than back then. I wish the civility of man would've advanced by learning from our experiences of the past. And, our progress with technologies that can be so beneficial to so many/all people. So much wasted positve potential. After thousands of years mankind is still at each other's throats worldwide, which is kind of an understatement. ( I get po'd sometimes, sorry) |
meroj User ID: 439530 United States 08/19/2008 11:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Feels different, more calculated - almost orchestrated. I sense the manipulation of events, and the callous disregard of the impact on pawns. But we pawns are much more numerous than we were then, and our government (maybe all governments) completely unaccountable now. Quoting: locomotionThe world has thousands more existing nuclear bombs, and all it would take is 'one' to loose the evil genie. More "calculated...orchestrated", etc., INDEED ! Anonymous Coward User ID: 320341 United States 08/19/2008 11:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Back then we were the good guys and the Russians were the bad guys. Things have changed. I think it started when they assassinated JFK, everything started to change...Vietnam, the 60's, then Nixon, Reagan and well you know the rest of the story now. |
Arcaneshift User ID: 487530 United States 08/19/2008 11:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'd like to hear some comments from some of our more mature users and their thoughts on the simlarities and differences between the Cold War and what's going on right now. Quoting: markusmaximusYes !!! This is the cold war over again and in many ways made worse by the collapse of the the dollar and the subsequent cost of living in a now repressive society. As we factor in various destabilizing factors such as multiculturalism and open borders and Homeland security trashing constitutional rights and the imbalance of checks and balances built into the system to reign in the white house not working. The legal system favoring corporations over the citizens of this nation. Each brick added to the pile will break the back of this nation. |
