Has been doing it for centuries. "Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible." [link to www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us] |

Has been doing it for centuries. Quoting: Apocalypse TrollThe Venice area for centuries has pumped it's water needs from the auqifer UNDERNEATH Venice area at a rate higher than it's replenishment rate. Voila ... the city has BEEN SINKING as the water has been removed for at least the last 150 years. I forget the total drop since 1850, but somehow 1.5 meters sticks in my mind. Back after the great floods in the 70's and 80's there were discussions of building an aqueduct to bring in water from the interior of Italy to service the Venice area (it is actually a heavy industrial area on the mainland side, so the amount of water required is tremendous), but I don't know what became of that plan. There has also been a discussion of building a dam structure at the entrance to the lagoon so that when the Adriatic Sea rises (due to winds and storms) the lagoon can be separated from the Sea and kept at a lower level than the Sea itself (London is already building/built such a structure to keep the Thames from flooding due to sea surges). The Italians like to talk alot ... but actual action when it comes to large infrastructure projects is definitely not of the German variety. Until the Ground Water Drawdown and the blocking of the Adriatic Sea projects are completed look for major Venice Flooding every 15 to 20 years. |

Quoting: Apocalypse TrollIt's a well know fact that Venice will probably submerge sooner or later. The only way to avoid (delay?) it is by construction of large dams around the city. I believe I read about a great project ($30 billion) that should be implemented in the next years/decades. It's a cronic problem though. ....... -"Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present, controls the past." George Orwell ("1984") -"Thought creates.
