Anonymous Coward User ID: 598402 Australia 01/23/2009 06:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Theodore Roosevelt did not use a Bible when taking the oath in 1901. Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman, and Richard Nixon swore the oath on two Bibles. John Quincy Adams swore on a book of law.[3] Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in on a Roman Catholic missal on Air Force One. He really doesn't have to use a bible to do it. Check the Constitution. It was his choice, and he chose no bible. |

Have you even visited Washington D.C.??? You might want to note that every building in Washington D.C. has some form of Christian writing or symbolism. Have you ever read our Consitution and Bill of Rights??? Probably not, lots of Christian reading there too..... Read up before you say anything else.... |

You have to swear or affirm, but the Constitution does not require a bible. It is the President's choice. Obama chose no bible. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 594600Yes, he does have to use the Bible. The country was FOUNDED on Christian principles and our ForFathers meant for it to be that way. bible isn't required...constitution says nothing about it and if anything, the language that formed our government was taken from native americans...not christians |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 594600Yes, he does have to use the Bible. The country was FOUNDED on Christian principles and our ForFathers meant for it to be that way. Sorry dumb ass! This country was founded on Constitutional Republic principles,of the ideas of old Roman Republic! Yes there were many christians at the signing of the declaration of Independence but also lots theists. Preachers didn't write our founding documents. Of course they use some of the themes from the bible, like respect for human life, property and God given Rights but in NO WAY was America founded to be a Christian state/nation. Was created for ALL peoples to come to who seek FREEDOM! Mainly from the countrys which had STATE RELIGIONS, such as the state church of England! Remember this fool! You're NOT supposed to SWEAR OATHS to begin with, much less while laying your hand on the BIBLE which FORBIDS the practice in the first place! If ANYTHING politicans should swear their Oaths of office while laying their hand on top of the US Constitution and Bill Of Rights! This govt of American is supposed to be run by the US Constitution , not the Bible! This Nation of America is for FREEDOM OF ALL, not just Christian folk! Its just a nation where Christian folk can practice their religious beliefs freely without interference from Govt. Not so Christian folk can impose their belief system on all others through law and force of govt! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 599186 United States 01/23/2009 07:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There already is a law on the books declaring this Nation as Christian - Congressional Law 97-280 Whereas the Bible, the Word of God, has made a unique contribution in shaping the United States as a distinctive and blessed nation and people; Whereas deeply held religious convictions springing from the Holy Scriptures led to the early settlement of our Nation; Whereas Biblical teachings inspired concepts of civil government that are contained in our Declaration of Independence and the constitution of the United States; Whereas many of our great national leaders--among them Presidents Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, and Wilson--paid tribute to the surpassing influence of the Bible in our country's development, as the words of President Jackson that the Bible is "the rock on which our Republic rests"; Whereas the history of our Nation clearly illustrates the value of voluntarily applying the teachings of the Scriptures in the lives of individuals, families, and societies; Whereas this Nation now faces great challenges that will test this Nation as it has never been tested before; and Whereas that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God through Holy Scripture can strengthen us as a nation and a people: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President is authorized and requested to designate 1983 as a national "Year of the Bible" in recognition of both the formative influence the Bible has been for our Nation, and our national need to study and apply the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. Approved October 4, 1982. 1 U.S. Cong. & Adm. News '82-29 96 Stat. 1211 |
