That's funny. The gov't keeps track of everything. It's being recorded but they aren't saying anything. It sucks not owning a home. I've been there. But then you gotta pay land taxes. Either way you've been complaining you paying too much on land taxes or you're just getting by staying at a motel. The homeless living on the streets will just died living in motels. So much better than living in your van or on the streets. I remember me and my mother went homeless when we were evicted. Ouch. We stay at a hotel for at least for a year. It's what my mother reported to social services. But our money ran out when it was good and we stay with someone we know. If my kids knew we were homeless. I'll say do better in school. You'll get scholarships to go to college. And get a realistic job or follow your dream the hard way. Why are we living in a motel? The American's Dream! So one of us can retire and buy us a home.

What with the $241 weekly rent, the cost of essentials and a $380 car payment, they cannot save.

If I was in that situation I would try to build a log cabin in the woods. Maybe get 4-5 other families and do a Front tier style town

Shit happens. You did what you had to do. I think back 1,000 years when people lived in much worse situations. Only difference between them and us is technology. WE are being fucked from every direction. You are a Survivor. People who never live thru a major life changing event don't get a chance to grow spiritually I believe.

Re: Hidden homeless: U.S. families living in motel rooms
I can relate to this. Back in 2007 I graduated high school and went to college. A month later my parents split and the bank foreclosed on our house, the house I grew up in. My dad and younger brother were forced to live in a motel while my dad tried to work and save to at least afford a normal apartment, which was hard due to needing not only the deposit and rent as disposable, but to keep affording food for him and my brother (they ate lots of PB&J and meat and cheese sandwiches).

When my brother wasn't finding a place to stay at friends houses, he was skipping school and getting in fights. Before long my brother and dad had a fight (very physical) and my dad kicked him out, and he went to live with my mom.

Eventually my dad saved enough to get out of the weekly motels but still apartments wouldn't approve him due to the foreclosure and poor credit. Only when my grandma agreed to cosign on a lease did he get to move into an apartment.

10 years later and my dad is still in an apartment, but doing okay. My brother also holds a decent steady job and has started a family, but he tells me that year in that motel stays etched in his memory always.

Our childhood home had 2 other families live in it, but today it is an abandoned derelict. I went to visit my old neighborhood a year ago with my mom. The outside of the house is unassuming other than a rotted out garage door and overgrown plant life. The inside has been ripped bear to the concrete slabs and holes where appliances once were. The walls punctured with loose wire hanging out. Garbage and makeshift beds littered throughout the house.

Seeing that scene, the place I grew up, all of my childhood memories made, become a place with nothing left, tore me up knowing I could never truly go back to any of that. Feeling completely disconnected from my childhood made me want to raze the house to the ground and burn the remains as a means to gain closure on that chapter of my life

Odd that he was a realtor and a college degree but was renting for his family.

Best advice... When you have a job don't expect it to last forever. Don't buy fancy cars, vacations etc.
Save some money and invest in a house you CAN afford. You can always move up but it's much harder to move down.

I love stereotyping Mot#$#$@ers such as U.
People claim addicts and criminals live lives of denial.
But denial is also deep rooted in people such as you who fail to see outside the box.
Regardless of your inept vision of how the world really is there is a manifestation of poverty and despair running rampant among many American citizens that are NOT addicts and are NOT mentally deficient.
You sir are are a part of a very big problem.

Re: Hidden homeless: U.S. families living in motel rooms
yes, and all the people losing their homes to foreclosure...are not helping the rent situation either...it's called supply and demand...more rentals are needed, so the prices inflate up to accommodate the demand..when the best thing to do would be to allow the people to stay in their homes...at least to keep them lived in...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 454032

Illegal aliens and rent subsidies also affect rent prices. More people and more money chasing a relatively fixed amount of housing equals higher housing prices. But there is always housing to be had. I have renters paying $875/month for a 2bdrm rental unit that cost me $55k to buy. They could have bought the place and paid less that $400 on a 30yr mortgage payment but instead are paying twice that in rent and building zero equity. Meanwhile, since they've been renting the property value has increased $5k. But some people just have a renter's mentality or initially buy more home than they can comfortably afford or get into negative equity situations where they cannot sell and walk away clean. Its not enough to simply look at these people in a motel room and draw conclusions. There were decisions made along the way that led to that point that must be considered to accurately assess how they arrived ath that situation.

The Garza family moved to the Costa Mesa Inn in August, after the husband, Johnny, lost his job at Target, his wife, Tamara, lost her job at Petco, and they were evicted from their two-bedroom rental."

people who work at target and petco should not be having kids.

i spent november and december in a cute fully furnished hotel room, free cable and internet and it was pretty fun.

That family has four kids. They complain about financial problems, but had their fourth child just two months ago.

I think something else has been overlooked also. The rise in homeowners who rent out a room to help make ends meet. College kids that share apartments. The list goes on. It is much worse than they are reporting.

The entire time, effort and wealth of a once great nation is totally consumed by feeding, clothing and wiping the butts of the peasant class. There is nothing left over to support truly productive people who have temporarily fallen on hard times. Everything is geared towards supporting the permanent underclass who have no interest in ever contributing anything to society and spend their entire lives as a net drain on the civil society. The US takes in $4 TRILLION / year in taxes and is $20 TRILLION in debt endlessly subsidizing the ever-growing parasite class. Productive citizen or those attempting to be productive are played as sucker and left in the lurch. Classic Maoism. Look it up.

I consider myself pretty lucky. I pay $800/month for a 4 bedroom house. One hour south of me in Burlington, VT? You are looking at 2k at LEAST for a house that size.

It's just not affordable for families in many, many places.

The tragedy is that so many repos are left empty and thieves and vandals destroy them. In my area, there are lots of abandoned business and residential properties going to waste. Government assistance could be used wisely by and renovating unused space. Instead, it's just another way for the scam artists to make a buck at the expense of everybody else.

I agree 100%. The fact is that with everything we purchase being taxed, levied or so forth by one agency or another, surely there is money in the coffers to create living space for people in OTHER THAN SECTION 8 HOUSING.

Why move to a state where a small house costs half a million?

i remember back in the late 80's early 90's NYC was turning away its section 8 people. they migrated onto long island. LI couldnt handle it and put these ppl up in motels scattered across both nassau/suffolk counties - as far as riverhead/the hamptons/rocky point etc.

i recall some families living in tents near smiths point.

800.00 a month for a motel thats not even an efficiency. if a charity is going to pay that, then why not offer them the rent/security depo - in lieu of them paying continuously for a motel (for those who still have a job that is but are homeless)

Yep. I can only imagine the people needing the help are balking at such a permanant settlement. They would much rather have the charties handouts close by. That's a "teach a man to fish" type of thinking instead of constantly supplying the fish.

Renting a dang trailer would be much more comfortable than a hotel room!
