Of course, you'd have to have a pretty crappy lawyer to lose a case like this, because there are a good number of low-budget porn producers that have been operating in michigan for decades.

But yeah, sometimes it's still like we're back in 1836, like when that guy got arrested on the Rifle River for swearing in front of women and children. I've tubed down that river dozens of times, and pretty much any group would be locked up if they actually bothered to enforce that law. Hell, if they wanted to go total nazi, they could just build a prison at the outlet, and let people tube or canoe right on in, for drunk and disorderly type crimes.

Dear God I hope they don't come here to the Southeast. There is a lot to be said for Southern Hospitality. We are pretty friendly and welcoming, but the people fleeing MI, CA, NY, MA, and the like are bringing their failed government-is-the-answer politics here and I for one have just about had enough. You would be shocked, we are, about how many are coming to South Carolina. I don't know about the other southern states, but we are loaded with people from Michigan and Ohio, or from northern states by way of Florida.

It's really hurting. We have our taxes raised regularly to pay for additional infrastructure for these people.

FYI: The people FLEEING CA and NEV and MICHIGAN, Florida, ETC., are NOT THE ONES RESPONSIBLE FOR RUINING their states. They are the people who've been hurt the worst. They lost the job, the savings in a house, a shot at the good life and the big dream all in one fell swoop. These people are injured, shell shocked and in desperate need of a welcoming city or town and FAR LESS Government to interfere in their lives. CA has now just raised their SALES tax to 9.5 percent. In some of the higher tax cities the total you pay at the register is 110.5 percent of the sale price of a given item. People who can travel are going out of state to buy almost anything they need that costs over a grand. Again, only the "little people" who have no other options are getting nailed for these taxes on a regular basis. And even with the state sales tax hike, it's not enough to erase the buckets of red ink the state is mired in today and will be fore the next fifty years. Typical CA story...: Friends of ours are wealthy people. They bought a house on the Laguna Beach Shores in a private gated community. Paid 9.5 million for the house. It is truly a beach front manse. Similar house down the road about 1/4 mile. More land, more square footage. Same architect built both. Same vintage (c. 1948/9). Both have huge pools and ocean frontage. The tax bill on my friends house is 91,000 per year. Yes, 91,000 per year. The same or very similar house a 1/4 mile away has taxes of 21,000 per year. You want to know why? The old retired fuck republicans that own the lower taxed house bought it in the mid 60's and paid under 300k for it. Their tax basis is now 1% per year of their last sale price. And they get some exemptions, etc., because of their age. So one couple pays 91,000 per year in property taxes while another withe the same or larger house pays nearly 70% less. This happens ALL OVER THE DAMNED STATE. I know people who'd move there tomorrow and buy a 4 million dollar house. But they don't want the 45,000 per year tax bill that's coming with it and will go up every year for the rest of their days. Even with a house paid for free and clear, your taxes can easily run more than most mortgage payments do! And the question is what the fuck are you, sitting in your multi-million dollar beach manse getting from the Government of CA that is possibly worth that kind of money? Absolutely NOTHING! In fact you probably have to have private security with armed response because the PD is too slow and won't come out because "after all, it's just a bunch of rich fuckers and they can afford it anyway." Typical LAPD attitude about responding in well -to do neighborhoods.)

CA is screwed and they have a gross revenue that would be the 7th largest economy in the world if they were a country. Yet this is what has happened to them. Businesses cannot afford to hire and they cannot afford to move people into these areas if they haven't owned a home there before. A $400k house elsewhere will cost you 2 million in LA. Or more. Many working couples cannot afford such a place.

MI is best known for cars and I've owned 3 Chevy's and 6 Fords. Still have the 1969 MarchI Mustang I grew up in. Bought a '67 cougar for my wife (who is from WI by the way). I generally don't ever go to "Chinamart" / Wal-Mart unless I absolutely half to. In the 80's their whole marketing campaign was about how the carried product made in America. Now look at 'em. Nothing but Chinese product as far as the eye can see in a place where you can't see from one end to the other. Want to blame somebody for what Wal-Mart did. Try starting with Wal-Mart.

So are lots of Nissans. Want tech jobs? Try Dell computers, also in TN. Oops, almost forgot about Vanderbuilt University in Nashville TN. The football team can't play worth crap but they do have the highest GPAs around. We aren't all hicks chewing weeds spitting for distance off the front porch you know.

As for the migration, there are generally two groups. One are the good, hard-working people that have exhausted all their resources in Michigan, and are moving elsewhere. Lots of construction workers started moving a couple years back when the real estate market fell apart up here. These people you actually want, they might take a few jobs, but they're hard workers and good people.

The other group are the social scabs (or whatever term you prefer). They're usually running away from people or the court, usually dodging petty crimes and/or drug charges. They scoot down south for a while, party for a while, until they get into trouble down there...then they race back...and back and forth for their whole lives, running away from problems they make for themselves. Whatever triggers them to go is just one in a list of reasons why people are happy to see them leave...and often help them pack, just to get them out quicker.
