Mine That Bird wins Kentucky Derby
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Mine That Bird dug up a miracle, stunning the field to win the Kentucky Derby with a dynamic stretch run through the mud at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old colt and jockey Calvin Borel found room along the rail deep in the stretch Saturday then pulled away to give the 50-1 long shot the second-biggest upset in the 135-year history of the race.

Mine That Bird paid $103.20 for a $2 bet. That's second only to Donerail, which paid $184.90 in 1913.

The win was the second Derby victory in three years for Borel, who used a similar stretch run to send Street Sense to the winner's circle in 2007.

Pioneerof the Nile held off Musket Man for second, but neither were a match for the unheralded colt from New Mexico.

Re: Mine That Bird wins Kentucky Derby
What a great story! Mine that Bird was purchased for only $9500.00. I just watched the race and it was so exciting! The jockey had just won the Kentucky Crown yesterday on a horse that probably would have won today, if it had been entered in the Derby. Good to hear something other than bad news for a change!

Re: Mine That Bird wins Kentucky Derby
He was juiced.

I watched the overhead and no way that horse accelerates like that.

The only gelding in the race.

The trainer was 1 for 32 this year. (and an ass on top of it)

He drove the horse 21 hours in a van there with a broken leg.

Give me a break.

Holy f**cking shit, 50-1????

You know I used to love horseracing.

Can't go there anymore. Think Eight Belles. And there were two deaths this year during practice.

I sure miss it though. This is the first year I haven't watched The Derby in ages.

Or jolted.

If I'm reading the chart right, he was dead last 19th after six furlongs and 12th at the mile.
That means he passed 11 horses in one furlong to lead at the top of the stretch.

Borel yelled "50-1" coming back across the grandstand.

Naw, I'm not a PETA fan at all, I think they're kinda whacked for many reasons, but yes I'm an animal lover.

These thoroughbreds are relative babies. Their bones are not developed enough for the stress that is put on them. I did my homework on the subject and it broke my heart.

Re: Mine That Bird wins Kentucky Derby
That was an exciting race to watch!

And it was amazing to watch the re-play, and see Mine That Bird come from so far behind and then win by so much.

Wow.

Nah. Those tests don't pick up 80% of the stuff their giving horses these days. Testing is a crime in itself.
