yea ill report them to BBB too but this toll free thing is good in addition i wonder if they can track me down or if doing that is illegal

You could do this:

Dial the speaking clock in Sydney, Australia, and stuff a small piece of folded paper under the phone handset, just enough to keep it from cutting off the phone.

Do this on a Friday evening, just before leaving work.

Better still would be one of those 900 scam numbers in the Caribbean that charge $20/minute.

for a truely high phone bill.. ring a developing country a real poor one.. even from australia which is basicly nextdoor east timor rings in at around 5 dollars a minute :)

Reporting them doesnt do crap. I was ripped off over 600.00 by a company out of IDAHO. Fraud, lies everything. All documented. Sent a letter to their BBB and attorney general.
What you have to relaize is the BBB is for the local business. They survive from the dues they pay.

Yeah, that really wouldn't work, OP. First, most PBX systems have safeguards against this, "dead" lines will shut off after a predetermined amount of time, so you'd need to provide some noise to keep that from happening. Second, normal phone lines aren't 24/7 all the time, the phone companies run tests at various times, and we've all been disconnected. Third, the "destination" would have their own rules, so calling long distance automated services would result in a disconnect after a predetermined amount of time, otherwise pranksters could shut down the service with the same idea.

In larger offices where the phone bill is a considerable part of the budget, metering software would highlight any deviations, so a month of long distance just wouldn't happen. You might get a few hours, and repeat it a number of times, but each time you do it, you're running the risk that someone's going figure out who's doing it.

Lastly, it's fairly easy to prove that nobody talks on the phone for a month straight, so the phone company would likely toss the charges, or reduce them significantly.

hook up a auto dialer to your computer and that way once the connection is made two seconds later the computer hangs up and calls again.

Most companies are charged per call on the toll free line so 1,000 calls a day would add up quick.

most companies that have a 800 number pay a flat fee every month reguardless of how much time is used.....

Exactly...and most of the time the calls are handled by a contracted call center, so even if it did work, you're not hurting the company, you're hurting someone else.
