I certianly do,I remember having 5 television channels and they went off the air at 11 pm.I remember listening to the radio daily ... our music was on vinyl records that we played on a turntable. There were no films on video or cd, no persoanl computers, no moblie phones and guess what? We survived and I say we were much happier and more well adjusted, overall.

The good ole days were not all that good. Like every time period, it was good for some and awful for others.

What I remember most from my childhood in the 50's was never even thinking about someone shooting up a school or park or just grabbing a kid off the street. Of course, there were a lot of mothers and grannies still at home then keeping an eye on all the kids around.

Also remember watching Howdy Doody and Mickey Mouse Club and Saturday or Sunday afternoons at the movies where it was a quarter to get in and a box of popcorn was a dime. Parents got rid of us for 35 cents a week and they showed kid friendly movies and lots of cartoons.

I remember cutting out of 8th grade, getting on the "L" and going to a Cubs game where you could get into the bleachers for 2 dollars which was a whole week's allowance then.

On the other hand, I also remember adults worrying about lay-offs and the price of food. HS kids getting jobs at supermarkets and gas stations and being expected to give half to their parents and to buy their own clothes from the money.

New cars were a big deal then. Dealers would have big parties every fall when they came out and they were packed. The whole family went. These were the days when even one car in the family was a luxury and the auto companies had men convinced that they had to do a trade in every 3 years which was how long it took to pay off the one they had.

A good job paid 50 dollars a week but then a loaf of bread was a quarter and a gallon of milk was about 50 cents.

At school, we were all expected to behave. I even had a teacher who made us stand up whenever an adult entered the room. Homework was a few hours a night, every night.

When I went to HS in the 60's girls had to wear skirts and boys had to wear what were called wash pants and a regular shirt. No t-shirts or even pull-overs. Again, heavy on the homework which was expected to be done and kids who failed were actually embarrassed by it.

School dances and social centers were common on Friday nights. You could get in for a quarter.

Later, we could hit the coffee houses which were becoming popular and did not serve alcohol so teens could get in to listen to some live music.

And the music was great. I remember how crazy we all were for the Beatles and the Beach Boys then. It was a fun time.

On the other hand, I also remember sitting in the school lunchroom during the Cuban missle crisis and wondering if a nuclear war was going to start that night. Was also in school the day Kennedy was killed which was truly a shock and took away our innocence about the world. Everything was different after that.

I remember walking home after school with my best friend in the 60's. No big deal I know, cept I am white and he was black. In good old SC. We go to his house it was pinto beans and cornbread, go to my house it was pinto beans and cornbread.
He learned bout country music and I learned bout soul and motown.
My friend is a ref at 12/14 under football and basketball. Sometimes he will call and I will ride with him to a ball game to watch. I check out the cd's in his truck for one to play. Lot of Charlie pride, Waylon, and his fav is Allen Jackson. In my truck you find some chi lites, lot of motown.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

F irst, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while
they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get
tested fordiabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
covered with bright colored lead-base paints.


We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets
and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.


As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster
seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes


Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special
treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.


We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one
actually died from this.


We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made
with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the
bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.


We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video
games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or
CD's, no cell phones, no person al computers, no Internet and no chat rooms
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were NO
lawsuits from these ACCIDENTS. YES real ACCIDENTS.


We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us
forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and
tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very
many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't
had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.


We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to
deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up
as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
for our own good.


While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave
and lucky their parents were.

The beach Boys were beginning to ge on the scoreboard with li'l deuce Coupe and 409-actually that engine revving in the on that recording was a 348 tripower ( also on the w block) from a friends 1961 Chevy.

Flatop haircuts were the order of thge day omn saturdays with a big glob of "Butch wax" which was piinkish peachy colored and smelt really good...like a rahter healthy French whores boudoir. Fire trucks were ALL red and noboy shot up schools cause they woul have gotten an asssbeating there, from mama, daddy grtandma's and pas and everybody they knew. Teachers whupped your ass without any worry of pschycon paretns coming to school hollering racism or "discriminashum".

Gays stayed where they belonged....working the holes between the stalls in the pissers at the truckstops and gas stations out on the highay...instead of the ivy covered halls of academia or defiling Congress and if you got knocked up due to irresponsibility then you either "went away to "school" til it was born or you asked a cullud woman
and went to the back alley to get scraped out like...and maybe died at the hands f an old drunk defrocked doctor wh shot up to much of his office supplies of drugs.

Yeah I remember waling thru the neighborhood 4-5 pubescents or teens with shotgns and waving to the cops when they drove past. they knew we were going up to the quarry but it was outside of the city limits so they didn't give a rat's ass. Took guns to school, my brother took my british 303 for a speech in the late 70s and we took shotguns in the trunk to go dovehunting after school or maybe quail hunting.... either one. we would mention it to a male teacher or coach and end up having to show them and discuss what we had VS what they used. NOBODY would have thought of shooting anyobody or the school.

Everybody had their own gun from about 8-10 yoa and nobody I knew has ever got in trouble for guns.....I still own them and always will. People had more responsibility then inposed by parents ans society.
