I certianly do,I remember having 5 television channels and they went off the air at 11 pm.I remember listening to the radio daily ... our music was on vinyl records that we played on a turntable. There were no films on video or cd, no persoanl computers, no moblie phones and guess what? We survived and I say we were much happier and more well adjusted, overall.

A speech by JFK telling everyone how bad the 1950s were

Our task is not merely one of itemizing Republican failures. Nor is that wholly necessary. For the families forced from the farm will know how to vote without our telling them. The unemployed miners and textile workers will know how to vote. The old people without medical care--the families without a decent home--the parents of children without adequate food or schools--they all know that it's time for a change.

Yes, I know about the good old days. That was back when a fella could lynch a black without much consequence, then go home and beat the wife and kids and kick the dog too. Back when a fella could only hope to live to 55 or 60 years old, and would expect to see at least a few of his kids die prematurely.

Ah, yes, the good old days.

Re: does anyone remeber the "good old days"
The good ole days were not all that good. Like every time period, it was good for some and awful for others.

What I remember most from my childhood in the 50's was never even thinking about someone shooting up a school or park or just grabbing a kid off the street. Of course, there were a lot of mothers and grannies still at home then keeping an eye on all the kids around.

Also remember watching Howdy Doody and Mickey Mouse Club and Saturday or Sunday afternoons at the movies where it was a quarter to get in and a box of popcorn was a dime. Parents got rid of us for 35 cents a week and they showed kid friendly movies and lots of cartoons.

I remember cutting out of 8th grade, getting on the "L" and going to a Cubs game where you could get into the bleachers for 2 dollars which was a whole week's allowance then.

On the other hand, I also remember adults worrying about lay-offs and the price of food. HS kids getting jobs at supermarkets and gas stations and being expected to give half to their parents and to buy their own clothes from the money.

New cars were a big deal then. Dealers would have big parties every fall when they came out and they were packed. The whole family went. These were the days when even one car in the family was a luxury and the auto companies had men convinced that they had to do a trade in every 3 years which was how long it took to pay off the one they had.

A good job paid 50 dollars a week but then a loaf of bread was a quarter and a gallon of milk was about 50 cents.

At school, we were all expected to behave. I even had a teacher who made us stand up whenever an adult entered the room. Homework was a few hours a night, every night.

When I went to HS in the 60's girls had to wear skirts and boys had to wear what were called wash pants and a regular shirt. No t-shirts or even pull-overs. Again, heavy on the homework which was expected to be done and kids who failed were actually embarrassed by it.

School dances and social centers were common on Friday nights. You could get in for a quarter.

Later, we could hit the coffee houses which were becoming popular and did not serve alcohol so teens could get in to listen to some live music.

And the music was great. I remember how crazy we all were for the Beatles and the Beach Boys then. It was a fun time.

On the other hand, I also remember sitting in the school lunchroom during the Cuban missle crisis and wondering if a nuclear war was going to start that night. Was also in school the day Kennedy was killed which was truly a shock and took away our innocence about the world. Everything was different after that.

Re: does anyone remeber the "good old days"
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

F irst, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while
they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get
tested fordiabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets
and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster
seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special
treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made
with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the
bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video
games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or
CD's, no cell phones, no person al computers, no Internet and no chat rooms
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were NO
lawsuits from these ACCIDENTS. YES real ACCIDENTS.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us
forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and
tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very
many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't
had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to
deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up
as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave
and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Yeah....and a nickel "Cocola" came in the box with the flip top lid or on the honor system where you were trusted to pay 5 cents and then gewt touy drink at some places with coke machines..and no they weren't thhe same amount of ayrup as the 10 oz they were just better ( by the way if you got a Sams nearby....go get some Mexican cokes...they are the same as the old pre high fructose corn syrup ones
19.95 for 24 and worth every pennny)...nice to know thhey don't poison their future cheap slave labor force like they do us huh?

Flathead Fords still chugged around with their unigque sound ( a few anyway) the lady up thew street STILL had a 1951 Kaiser.

Shingig, Hootenanny and American banstand and Rocky and Bullwinkle were popular saturday TV pursuits...with poltical commentary that went over most peoples heads on "moose and squirrel show...2 channels in my area except for "Educational TV" which was some teacher writing or doing math on a big roll of brown paper for it's main programming.

The beach Boys were beginning to ge on the scoreboard with li'l deuce Coupe and 409-actually that engine revving in the on that recording was a 348 tripower ( also on the w block) from a friends 1961 Chevy.

Flatop haircuts were the order of thge day omn saturdays with a big glob of "Butch wax" which was piinkish peachy colored and smelt really good...like a rahter healthy French whores boudoir. Fire trucks were ALL red and noboy shot up schools cause they woul have gotten an asssbeating there, from mama, daddy grtandma's and pas and everybody they knew. Teachers whupped your ass without any worry of pschycon paretns coming to school hollering racism or "discriminashum".

Gays stayed where they belonged....working the holes between the stalls in the pissers at the truckstops and gas stations out on the highay...instead of the ivy covered halls of academia or defiling Congress and if you got knocked up due to irresponsibility then you either "went away to "school" til it was born or you asked a cullud woman
and went to the back alley to get scraped out like...and maybe died at the hands f an old drunk defrocked doctor wh shot up to much of his office supplies of drugs.

There were olld folks around who either they or their p[arents grew up in the reconstruction perod of history, with it's harsh ways courtesy of JW Booth's dumbass by him killing the only yankee who wished to embrace the south back into the union instead of pinish those who merely lived below the Ohio river. They sincerely distrusted those of the northerm faith.

WWII was fresh in folks minds and they had all brought backk something from a THompson smg to a Garand or K98 mauser...just in case.

Getting your ass whipped did not result in any gov't agcy showing up to harrass your parents...if anyone showed up, it would be too take your little monkey ass to reform school....

In 1961 I grank out f the "colored water fountain at a deptmant and some clerk/manager jumped my ass.
My mama jumped right back on his really fast telling him i could not read....case cllosed + he was made to apologize to me by another outraning manager.... also didn't die from ' non caucasoid bacterias er nuthin''. Later I opened the door of a restroom ann another departmant store and
was met with a very old blaque woman sitting on A BUCKET!...she exploded into some had-to-be-African or pidgin gibberish....I went to tell my mama and she showed me th differences in those words again so I learned "white" and "colored" before i learned my ABCs.
That was the good old days y'all. Mayybe some of them weren't so good.

Polio shots really reallly hurt like hell! Before we got the li'l pink sugarcube with the medicine in it....had to wlk to the school on a Sunday to get dosed.

God Bl;ess America really meant something and the tears in people's eyes when the pledged allegiance too the flag were very real.

Yeah I remember waling thru the neighborhood 4-5 pubescents or teens with shotgns and waving to the cops when they drove past. they knew we were going up to the quarry but it was outside of the city limits so they didn't give a rat's ass. Took guns to school, my brother took my british 303 for a speech in the late 70s and we took shotguns in the trunk to go dovehunting after school or maybe quail hunting.... either one. we would mention it to a male teacher or coach and end up having to show them and discuss what we had VS what they used. NOBODY would have thought of shooting anyobody or the school.

Everybody had their own gun from about 8-10 yoa and nobody I knew has ever got in trouble for guns.....I still own them and always will. People had more responsibility then inposed by parents ans society. Soon after the voting rights and cicil rights bills passed.....the feds began to manufacture victims and the assembly continues today....the only manufacturing concern in " uh uh uh Murika" that remains profitable for the manuacturers and manufactured victims. with 12-13 years now being the norm for a generation.

We have 5-6 generation at one whack living in gov't housing side by side on our dime today. Still hhanding oput fish instead of fishing poles or pplows so we have to plow for those who have been taught that becauuse of "sklavery" they are exempt from any standards of "resposkibilty" For mr to get 6 generation back would redate the Revolutionary war.

Tnaks LBJ, Ted Kennedy ( both gleefully being roasted in hell and stewing in their own grease!!! LOL hopefully Ted is a drunken Englishmean and is sharing a demon cock with old Joe and Hitler) ) the pinko commies who gained powr under Dem and Rep banners in the 60s. Thanks J Edgar for all the shiit yoou id to us....most of which we haven't even figured out yet.
