The main reason why it is illegal is because it would pretty much take over the pharmaceutical companies business. Considering that the majority of medical problems can be treated in one way or another with marijuana. Another reason why it is still illegal is because it generates copious amounts of revenue for the prison industrial complex. Plain and simple the only reason why it is illegal is money and politics.
