What is claimed is:

1. A method of reducing atmospheric warming due to the greenhouse effect resulting from a layer of gases in the atmosphere which absorb strongly near infrared wavelength radiation, comprising the step of dispersing tiny particles of a material within the gases' layer, the particle material characterized by wavelength-dependent emissivity or reflectivity, in that said material has high emissivities with respect to radiation in the visible and far infrared wavelength spectra, and low emissivity in the near infrared wavelength spectrum, whereby said tiny particles provide a means for converting infrared heat energy into far infrared radiation which is radiated into space.

2. The method of claim wherein said material comprises one or more of the oxides of metals.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said material comprises aluminum oxide.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said material comprises thorium oxide.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said particles are dispersed by seeding the stratosphere with a quantity of said particles at altitudes in the range of seven to thirteen kilometers above the earth's surface.

7. The method of claim wherein said material comprises a refractory material.

10. A method for reducing atmospheric warming due to the greenhouse effect resulting from a greenhouse gases layer, comprising the following step:

seeding the greenhouse gases' layer with a quantity of tiny particles of a material characterized by wavelength-dependent emissivity or reflectivity, in that said materials have high emissivities in the visible and far infrared wavelength spectra and low emissivity in the near infrared wavelength spectrum,

whereby said particles are suspended within said gases' layer and provide a means for converting radiative energy at near infrared wavelengths into radiation at the far infrared wavelengths, permitting some of the converted radiation to escape into space.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said material comprises one or more of the oxides of metals.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein said material comprises aluminum oxide.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to a method for the reduction of global warming resulting from the greenhouse effect, and in particular to a method which involves the seeding of the earth's stratosphere with Welsbach-like materials.

What facts?

1. You post that a New York company got a grant to develop efficient ways to generate aerosols. Why would they do that? Well, one possibility is to spray antidotes to toxins sprayed by Bad Guys (biological warfare). Another might be for spraying to stop vectors of infectious diseases. There are a bazillion reasons why a company gets a grant to do this, but is it evidence for "chem-trails"? No, it's not evidence for (or aagainst) anything. You say, "add a little reasoning" when it sounds like you're really saying "jump to conclusions".


2. An anonymous coward reprints the "mechanic's story" originally from back in 2001, which purports to be the story of an aircraft mechanic (anonymous, of course -- they always are) who talks about "chem-trail" equipment. The problem is that the way the "mechanic" discusses his work is not borne out by any real A&P person; and there are simply so many errors in the story that it's usually not even presented by any "chem-trail" devotee except for a relative newbie, since it's been debunked so often.

So what facts has anyone here presented which give any credence to the "chem-trail" myth? I certainly don't see any.

There is no disputing that aircraft have been used to spray chemicals; be this for warfare, agriculture, or attempts at weather modification.

What I dispute is the idea that there is a vast conspiracy that results in what are called "chemtrails" all over the world and that these ordinary contrails have any effect on human health.

There are several differing claims put forth by various chemtrail conspiracies, not all of them are in agreement.

Claim: Chemtrails are intended to harm the population for some nerfarious purpose. (Drug company profits, depopulation programs, aliens from Veta 3 offered a good price for Utah if we clear it out..)

Problem with claim: "Chemtrails" are delivered at too high an altitude to be effective. Chemical agents must be made at low altitude to have any accuracy and to avoid large dispersal that would dilute the effectiveness of the agent. "Chemtrails" are never seen making ground contact, thus they are almost certainly just contrails.

2nd Problem with claim: The human population continues to grow despite decades of conspiracy theorists making this claim. If this claim were true, the government is so bad at it that you will die of old age before they ever manage to kill you with a chemtrail.

Claim: Chemtrails are being used to modify the weather.

Problem with claim: If the goal is to stop global warming, why would chemtrails need to be secret? If it is meant to be secret, why are the patents for such technology public? It is more likely that a variety of options to deal with global warming are being studied, even tested, but no effective or viable method for stopping global warming through airborne weather modification has yet been found.

Claim: Thousands of aircraft across the globe are involved in the creation of chemtrails

Problem with claim: This would involve thousands of people being in on the conspiracy.

It would tank a large amount of chemicals needed to spread chemtrails that are hundreds of miles long even if the dispersal is at very low rate. The thick clouds being described as chemtrails would empty the lifting capacity of even the largest aircraft after only a few hundred feet. See firefighting aircraft to get an idea of the amount of volume needed to produce a large chemical cloud.

Storing tanks of chemicals on commercial airliners would change the weight of the aircraft and thus the amount of fuel needed to travel from destination to destination. No airline would fail to notice that their aircraft are suddenly being less fuel efficient, thus all accounting and corporate leadership would have to be in on the secret.

No maintenance crew would fail to notice the loading of large amounts of chemicals onto an aircraft, so they have to be in on it as well.

Aircraft would have to be routed specifically to disperse the chemicals to wherever the actors behind the supposed conspiracy need to spray them. Thus all air traffic controllers would also have to be part of the conspiracy.

The more people involved in a conspiracy, the less time it will remain a secret, yet conspiracy theorists have been putting forth their chemtrail theories for decades.

The easiest explanation is that conspiracy believers don't understand normal aircraft contrails.

Lots of people, including Teller, have proposed dumping reflective material into the atmosphere to raise the albedo of the Earth and thus keep the temperatures from rising.

And all of these ideas have not come to fruition, for a lot of reasons, including the fact that the same reflective material which will block UV insolation to the Earth will also block IR radiation from the Earth, so you'd have cooler days and warmer nights. The net change could not be any difference in temperature at all.

Another reason why this idea was never adopted is that the amount of stuff dispersed would have to be disperesed over and over again as it fell to the Earth, and how many thousands of aircraft would be needed to do that? (And that's not counting the cost -- and pollution -- of all the fuel used to fly the jets up there into the stratosphere in thefirst place.)

Yet another reason is that even today, our climate models and the computers which try to run them are simply not capable of predicting all the potential unwanted consequences from such a spraying program.

That's why none of those spray ideas was ever adopted, and that's why none of that stuff has any bearing on the "chem-trail" myth.
