the only time of the day when there are no trading curbs is from 3:30-4:00pm EST, and until 4:15pm EST for stock index futures. Theoretically, the market could be down 9.99% at 3:30, then fall another 10-15% in 30 minutes of trading. Doubtful, but it COULD happen that way.
A crash is a multi day affair, usually lasting 3-4 trading days....in 1987 it actually began on Oct 5th, and ended on Oct 20th.
