Sayan; Hebrew: helpers, assistants) refers to Diaspora Jews who provide assistance to the Mossad.[1] Gordon Thomas estimates that in the United States and Britain, there are at least 20,000 sayanim who aid Israel's intelligence agencies in a number of ways.[2] Generally-speaking, these non-Israeli Jewish volunteers are asked to engage in legal activities that will not bring them into trouble with the authorities. There are exceptions, however, as for example in the case of Jonathan Pollard, the U.S. Naval intelligence employee who engaged in espionage on behalf of Israel's intelligence agencies and whose exposure by the FBI strained relations between the U.S. and Israel.[3] Contents [hide] 1 Overview 2 Sayanim in fiction 3 References 4 Bibliography 5 Further reading [edit] Overview Victor Ostrovsky, a former Mossad katsa turned author, wrote extensively about activities of the sayanim, as has Gordon Thomas. According Ostrovsky and Thomas, the sayanim provide assistance of various kinds to Mossad officers operating in foreign countries. This assistance can include facilitating medical care, money, logistics, and even overt intelligence gathering. They can be Judges, Court Clerks, Expert Witnesses, Child Protective Service Workers, Assistant District Attorneys, Police Officers, or anyone with a great degree of power over people's lives, and will do anything at the behest of Mossad case officers (katsa) for the State of Israel against its enemies or those perceived to be unfavorable politically to Israeli policy. (By Way of Deception, Victor Ostrovsky). Sayanim are supposedly not directly involved in intelligence operations, and are only paid for their expenses. Sayanim must be 100% Jewish. They live abroad, and though they are not Israeli citizens, many are reached through their relatives in Israel. Katsas are in charge of the sayanim, and most active sayanim will be visited by a katsa once every three months or so, which for the katsa usually means between two and four face-to-face meetings a day with sayanim, along with numerous telephone conversations. The system allows the Mossad to work with a skeleton staff. That's why, for example, a CIA station would employ about 100 people, while a comparable Mossad station would need only six or seven. The existence of this large body of volunteers allows the costs of intelligence gathering to be greatly reduced, and may be one reason why the Mossad operates with fewer case officers than fellow intelligence agencies. [edit] Sayanim in fiction Sayanim feature prominently in Frederick Forsyth's novel The Fist of God, depicting Mossad operations in Iraq and other countries. Israel’s Government has thrown its weight behind efforts by supporters to counter what it believes to be negative bias and a tide of pro-Arab propaganda. The Foreign Ministry has ordered trainee diplomats to track websites and chatrooms so that networks of US and European groups with hundreds of thousands of Jewish activists can place supportive messages. In the past week nearly 5,000 members of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) have downloaded special “megaphone” software that alerts them to anti-Israeli chatrooms or internet polls to enable them to post contrary viewpoints. A student team in Jerusalem combs the web in a host of different languages to flag the sites so that those who have signed up can influence an opinion survey or the course of a debate. Jonny Cline, of the international student group, said that Jewish students and youth groups with their understanding of the web environment were ideally placed to present another side to the debate. “We’re saying to these people that if Israel is being bashed, don’t ignore it, change it,” Mr Cline said. “A poll like CNN’s takes just a few seconds to vote in, but if thousands take part the outcome will be changed. I live in the Netherlands and visit several news- and opinionsites over here. Whenever a subject is started or newsarticle is posted that is just the slightest bit 'critical' about the Isreali government or could possible be considered 'critical', posters who use the name 'Likud Netherlands' are reacting within 3 minutes or so! Its like a very large group of people is constantly 'scanning' these sites for every subject concerning Israel. And its like they operating in a rather creepy, organised way using the same type of 'standard answers' all of the time. Nothing wrong with defending your own causes, but this seems more like propaganda warfare. Rather creepy that Israel or at least certain groups in that country seem to be OVEROBSESSED about how other countries react on them |

The main interviewee was a woman, and if IIRC, the staff wore matching uniforms. They allowed the cameras into one of the rooms where the staff was at work monitoring what was being said and, uh, presenting their agenda. One big example given was Wikipedia. They admitted they regularly monitor it and fix the information whenever it gets changed by outsiders. But is this really surprising? It seems like there'd be more orgs doing this stuff to, uh, spread their message. |
