Well, I think they reason is more pragmatic that they chose primates.

We have opposable thumbs and are physically able to hold tools. That's key.

No matter how smart a dog or cat is, they can't physically hold a hammer or a screwdriver with their paws.

Don't be ridiculous. Waaaaay before Sitchin EVEN exist, all ancient civilizations reported giant alien-gods coming from stars. Be a good monkey-sapiens, get a FUCKING BOOK of ancient Hindu, Greek or Egyptian literature and READ IT!!

Sure, it's like as Zecharia Sitchin wrote in his books: The primates were ergonomically suited to work with mining tools, but there are too many reports in ancient civilizations, about weird hybrid humanoids like centaurs, harpies, satyrs and mainly reptile humanoids... Assuming that such alien engineering was so advanced and capable to produce all sort of hybrids, that they could mix primates with other species and produce other suitable breeds...

Apes have opposable thumbs. They are not as dexterous as a humans, but enough so to where they could easily be manipulated genetically to render a more efficient tool working hand.


Other candidates other than the Old World monkeys and Great Apes and others in the primate families would be:

Squirrel
Raccoon
Giant pandas
Opossum

Cats, dogs and other four legged only creatures do not have 'thumbs'. They may have 'dew claws' but those are far from thumbs.

Birds have wings - no arms, no hands. They would be the least likely to be enhanced to do labor.

From what I have heard on the subject (which here at GLP you hear a lot) these aliens were pretty stupid creatures to begin with. Not only did they pass up on the trillions of tons of raw materials in the asteroid belt which includes things like gold, platinum, palladium, iridium requiring no heavy lifting to break from the gravity, and since most are fairly small able to fit into a decent sized ship, it would have been far easier to bring the whole rock on board and break it down on board.

Further, while they could ply the stellar spaces, they seem to have no developed simple computer technology which would have enabled robots, machines fully incapable of revolting, from doing the hard labor.

Then when it comes to their DNA engineering they went with a tool using creature anyway (most apes and monkeys do use simple tools in their day to day life) and only slightly modified it.

All in all these aliens were pretty dumb, went about the whole thing in the worst possible way.

Then thats not nice of them.

hindu, greek and egyptian gods are archetypes, all legitimate parts of the emotional spectrum/human psyche. they are symbolic, not to be taken literally! ancient tribes have spoken of the "shining one's" who came from the stars but they are a different story. nothing to do with the bollox that sitchin writes about.
