Carl Jung and the Collective Unconscious - An explanation for telepathy?
Carl Jung and the Collective Unconscious

Carl Jung was a student and follower of Freud. He was born in a small town in Switzerland in 1875 and all his life was fascinated by folk tales, myths and religious stories. Although he had a close friendship with Freud early in their relationship, his independent and questioning mind soon caused a break.

Jung did not accept Freud’s contention that the primary motivation behind behavior was sexual urges. Instead of Freud’s instinctual drives of sex and aggression, Jung believed that people are motivated by a more general psychological energy that pushes them to achieve psychological growth, self-realization., psychic wholeness and harmony. Also, unlike Freud, he believed that personality continues to develop throughout the lifespan.

What is the Collective Unconscious

The collective unconscious is different. It’s like eye color. If someone were to ask you, “How did you get your eye color,” you would have to say that there was no choice involved – conscious or unconscious. You inherited it. Material in the collective unconscious is like this: inherited. It never came from our current environment. It is the part of the mind that is determined by heredity. So we inherit, as part of our humanity, a collective unconscious; the mind is pre-figured by evolution just as is the body. The individual is linked to the past of the whole species and the long stretch of evolution of the organism. Jung thus placed the psyche within the evolutionary process.

What’s in the collective unconscious? Psychological archetypes. This idea of psychological archetypes is among Jung’s most important contributions to Western thought. An ancient idea somewhat like Plato’s idea of Forms or “patterns” in the divine mind that determine the form material objects will take, the archetype is in all of us. The word “archetype” comes from the Greek “arche” meaning “first, and “type” meaning “imprint or pattern.” Psychological archetypes are thus first prints, or patterns that form the basic blueprint for major dynamic counterparts of the human personality. For Jung, archetypes pre-exist in the collective unconscious of humanity. They repeat themselves eternally in the psyches of human beings and they determine how we both perceive and behave. These patterns are inborn within us. They are part of our inheritance as human beings. They reside as energy within the collective unconscious and are part the psychological life of all peoples everywhere at all times. They are inside us and they are outside us. We can meet them by going inward to our dreams or fantasies. We can meet them by going outward to our myths, legends, literature and religions. The archetype can be a pattern, such as a kind of story. Or it can be a figure, such as a kind of character.

to me jungs theory is a potential explanation for the telepathy phenomenon & many other paranormal events eg knowing relatives have died, twins connection etc.

as i see it the "master pattern" for the collective unconscious must come from somewhere (currently unknown).

it is where this originates from that i believe provides the connection between people that allows for paranormal phenomena.

Re: Carl Jung and the Collective Unconscious - An explanation for telepathy?
a bit more for those interested:

All of our human struggles and conditions are representative of aspects of the collective. We are here to take on the archetypal human situations–Birth, Death, Childhood, Marriage, Maturation, Transformation, and so on. And the archetypal personages–Mother, Father, Lover, Hero, Healer, Servant, and so on–as well. We are always taking on some part of an archetypal collective pattern that is of Humanity, and of our One Body. And we must never forget this; otherwise we get lost in our personal story lines, separating from our roots. Then we feel isolated and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things–which is not Reality. We are never "just" doing something personal or unique to us. This knowledge alone, if absorbed, is transformative; it will give you a sense of meaning and high purpose. So stop right now and really take this in, through a moment of deep Self-reflection.

When we touch into this dimension in our consciousness, all things humanly possible can be accessed. Then, if we will image (imagine) one of these possibilities, we can bring it down from the abstract into the concrete mind, and this potential can be ours. Spirit is materializing through us in this manner. Through our own creative mental intentions and abilities, we Self-create: we are the reality-makers of our personal world. Remember, in the new physics, we´ve learned that "the observer disturbs."

The Consciousness level that is connected TO reality - defined as the Soul. But all definitions are a limited interpretation of a greater whole.
This is the level at which we are all connected as a whole Consciousness. KNOWING and RECOGNTION vs. PERCEPTUAL INTERPRETATION.

sorry if its a bit heavy - i love this kind of stuff.

i´ve always thought we were all connected at some level.

maybe this also explains why women who are friends menstruation cycles synchronise.

so in laymans terms:

we are all connected at a "soul" level (i am a buddhist so that fits in well with my beliefs) & our "soul" is merely an extension from the originating "soul dimension" which extends into our physical reality. Hence the telepathy connection as we are all still joined the that level ( the collective unconscious).

i also believe mediums use this to speak to the dead.

Agreed...only that they don´t communicate with anyone that is dead...only not in a physical-dense form. Everyone has this ability....the inner connection has to be developed first....through Allowing. Meditation - or a place of NO thought.

Re: Carl Jung and the Collective Unconscious - An explanation for telepathy?
I would just like to add one thought, here..

We contribute to the whole, and everything and anything we do - the calibre of our action - changes the content of the whole (the collective unconscious) for everyone...

This is written out in A Course in Miracles, that we are each a reflection of each other. There is really only one being, and many reflections: at the level of Spirit. At the level of experience, it´s different and each individual is unique. But the life essence is the same.

I think archetypes can get too rigid, and be an excuse to explain things, rather than oblige one to employ original thinking.. Archetypes are patterns to fall back on, and can produce inertia if they are used too frequently.

This from ´A Course in Miracles´:

"It is possible even in this world to hear ONLY that voice and no other. It takes effort and great willingness to learn. It is the final lesson that I learned, and God´s Sons are as equal as learners as they are as Souls. The voice of the Holy Spirit IS the call to Atonement, or the restoration of the integrity of the mind."

You should read Deepak Chopra´s book "How to know God". He goes into great detail explaining the collective unconsciousness using quantum physics.

Mr. Synchronicity I call it. Like a voice telling me I am going to win this card game...BIG.
Everything is fixed viewed on a higher level. But at our level we rarely realize it.
My contemplated suicide was not to be and there was an Intervention.
"John? Do you know what a Seraph is?" it asked.
"Some biblical thing..."

So that is who is in charge. Not just He,but the Deva Pokey has access to my mind.
"I am never letting you out of my sight again!" said the Seraphim angrilly.

This is reflected in Stephan McNallen's meta genetics theory where there is a folk soul or a racial soul. Our Ancient cultural art can be a good reference for this..
