It's snowing in Montana...

Hey O! I'm thinking it was simply a helmet streamer, big jets of plasma that pour off the sun at various points like on a clock, 2, 4 9 etc. This one was at the 11:00 position. Part of it detached and balled up a bit and let loose WAY to the 'left' of Earth, no where near earth directed. Now, having said that, pretty big coronal hole storm potential for the 7-8. The coronal hole canyon stretches almost the entire length of the sun.

Heads up!! SWPC posted has posted a G2 #geomag storm watch for Sunday and Monday. Get a look at the coronal hole that should make this activity - it's huge. Should be a good couple days for #aurora. Stay tuned and please RT.

G2-CLASS GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA has upgraded their watch for geomagnetic storms on Oct. 7-8 from G1 (minor) to G2 (moderately strong). This is in response to a stream of solar wind approaching Earth from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere, described below. Arctic auroras are almost certain to appear when the gaseous material arrives, and the light show could descend to northern-tier US States such as Maine, Michigan, and Washington.

Moderate (G2) Geomagnetic Storm Watch
Large Coronal Hole #34 is now facing Earth. A high speed solar wind stream flowing from the opening in the sun's atmosphere is expected to reach Earth by October 7th and could generate Moderate (G2) geomagnetic storming. Sky watchers at high latitudes should be alert for visible aurora later this weekend.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS: As predicted, a G1-class geomagnetic storm is in progress on Oct 7th as Earth enters a fast-moving stream of solar wind. The gaseous material is flowing from a large canyon-shaped hole in the sun's atmosphere. Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras after nightfall. There is also a chance the storm could intensify to category G2. If so, auroras could appear in the USA as far south as, e.g., Maine, Michigan and Washington.

First contact with the solar wind stream produced a bright outburst of green auroras over northern Sweden. "Massive auroras danced across the sky above Abisko National Park," reports Chad Blakley of Lights over Lapland, whose automated webcam captured the display: [link to spaceweathergallery.com]

Aurora Displays ALERT: A CIR is Expected to HIT Earth's Magnetic Field this Weekend

CO-ROTATING INTERACTION REGION: Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Oct. 14th when a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. CIRs are transition zones between slow- and fast-moving streams of solar wind. They contain shock-like density gradients and enhanced magnetic fields that often do a good job sparking Arctic auroras.

BERSERK AURORAS: You never know what might happen under the Northern Lights. "I was photographing a very mild display from Hvítserkur, Iceland, on Oct. 9th when suddenly the auroras went berserk," reports Olivier Staiger. "I didn't have time to change the camera settings, so my Canon EOS 6 completely overexposed this wild event."

This kind of luminous explosion is called an "auroral substorm." During a substorm, ordinary auroras suddenly transform into raging displays of light, sometimes even casting shadows on the ground. NASA's THEMIS spacecraft has shown that some substorms occur when auroras collide: A fast-moving, intense knot of auroral light swoops in from the north and interacts with more leisurely quiescent auroras. The combination produces a display best described as "B E R S E R K," says Staiger.
