No one is expecting a quick resolution, but at least the situation is somewhat stable and contained and shouldn't come to the MASSIVE GLOBAL NUCLEAR DOOM that many here seem to actually want.

The real problem is Japan. Best-case scenario and they still probably have a large area of Fukushima prefecture uninhabitable for years to come, the economy teetering on the brink, not to mention 20,000+ dead and half a million homeless in the north.

Even as a non-doomist I am still very worried about Tokyo.

Good reporting, FT. I've noticed your other posts, and you seem to try to keep things in perspective. We've got a big problem already without blowing it into a full-scale apocalypse, as many of us are wont to do.

It helps to have a voice of reason around here. FT's not saying everything is fine. He's just trying to say let's not automatically jump to the worst case. It usually isn't that bad, and it probably won't be this time.

Thanks Rev-bo and Timedweller. As a newcomer to this board I've noticed that positive-to-moderate outlook threads never get pinned and rarely get much attention - it is always those that predict TERRIBLE DOOM. At first I would see something like "FUKUSHIMA HUGE MELTDOWN - WORLD FUCKED!!!" and would get scared. Then I would open the thread, follow the link (if one was provided) and then realize how almost every hyperbolic doom thread title is a complete skewing of the actual article that inspired it.

The situation is far from peachy. I worry for the people of Japan and all of us really. But it is highly unlikely at this point that Fukushima will be the MEGADOOM that some people say that it is and, unfortunately, some seem to want it to be.
