Sorry if I come across as a wiseguy here, sitting on a high horse or something...

But fact is that I trust our authorities to watch our back regarding radiological threats. They have earned my trust and I hope your equivilant authorities can manage to do the same.

The last thing government wants to do is upset the day-to-day activities of the people that produce revenue for them. Without us, there is no them...although you would not know that from the way they treat us.

I don't think the government has an answer for this radiation, so they want us to continue to work, spend, and fork over a portion to them. The government is no more than an increasingly psychopathic corporation.

Have largely gone unanswered and ignored to date - except for the creepy and continual canned "safe/low dose" memes. Over and over again - no matter what independent or accredited and highly credentialed information is brought forward.

Then they fail to do their job, IMO. As state agencies they should have certain performance levels to live up to and answer time is one of them.

You should expect nothing less from your equivalent authorities. It is a very important component in the psychological defence strategy/capability of your country to provide citizens with timely and accurate information.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1301223

We do expect it. I hear everyone across the spectrum demand it. I think what may be escaping your esteemed and shared opinion is:

It's increasingly clear they don't work for us.

So, in the absence of that governance, information or our assets, we're trying to make due as best we can in the face of serious challenges. And, we keep trying to demand - it's just not leading to sane, practical results - yet. It's like being trapped in a box and pushing from all directions at once sometimes - with a big corporate stamp on it for irony. Some people's boxes are cushier than others... But, it's still just a box.

We can't even diagnose the problem effectively without disclosure.

I feel what we're all expressing with extreme frustration, peppered with practical advice here is:

When they poison and taint our wee one's milk, the last shred of curtain came off OZ and I'd switch to safe milk in one hand, leaving my other hand free for alternate solutions from ballot box to... whatever works for the babies. I don't intend to go home with a tin heart and a compliment either.

You come from a country where the people seem to be better cared for. You have free health care, a reasonably-priced education system, a branch of government that will take the people's side on chemical additives and GMOs, and you have pensions. (correct me if i am wrong.) You even have government telling the world of the dangers of constant cell phone use and are actively finding ways to protect its people. People in your country have a lot more trust in their government.

We in the states have a corrupt election system, GMO foods, high fructose corn syrup, fluorides in the water, electromagnetic radiation everywhere, hormones in meat, hormones in plastic baby bottles, militarized police, and a media that entertains or divides, but does not inform.

I do not mean the following in a condescending manner...Have you followed how the US government acted in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina? How the US acted (and still acting) after the major oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico? How about the lack of protection for our people who live along the Mexican border? How 40 percent of our bridges are beyond their useful life (we were hoping that unemployed people would get work rebuilding our nations infrastructure, but nothing came of that)? Many people realize this and no longer trust our government to help us or inform us...just make us available to corporations as worker pawns and consumers.

As far as radiation information goes. The information I have received includes one government official saying it would be good to take iodine, while another says there is no problem. We get news of the minuscule first cloud, but nothing about the next waves of radiation. We have to go to foreign websites to at least get wind models of where the stuff is blowing. We get scattered reports of contamination in rainwater and milk, but there is no official clearing house for information (I get more here at GLP)

Quite literally nothing to worry about here.

It only takes a miniscule fraction of a micron with alpha and beta particles. Living and protecting children is not a hobby.

Napping pillows are on your bed. A bucket of sand to bury your head is at the hardware store. I hope you never meet an oncologist. I hope I'm nutters. I hope you're right. That doesn't mean I'll consume those mushrooms or serve them to kids.

I really don't see what you are panicking about, even the higher numbers would be comparable to flying in a jet from LA to New York City..that's about all the radiation you would get.
It is not really harmful at this point.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1256870

Are you stupid? Didn't you just read the OP's comment right above your own?

God, people can be so ignorant!

Here is what OP said:

It seriously gets me riled to hear anyone irresponsibly compare backgrond gamma exposure to ingested alpha or beta particles.

WTF? UCB should just release the data and STFU about safety recs that aren't safe. I imagine they don't want industry funding affected like what happened to NYAS after the Chernobyl study and/or they want to provide "context," but it's better to leave that to renowned health professionals with radiological experience, or at least include the infant tolerant dose below the data. Even those FDA intervention guidelines lead to "acceptable" model deaths and are set for political, cost and practicality reasons. Exposure deaths are still, however, deaths from exposure and California is a large aggregate population, meaning people (children, high risk) will die from this.

I say this not to scare, but to use informed caution to prepare and mitigate your and your family's exposure in an unprecedented, cumulative, ongoing situation where some exposure is simply and low cost preventable.

It certainly does in the "pre-event" category. We're already experiencing stagflation and food rose 6% recently - a record on decreasing income. Beef futures shot up 268% in the US on the cesium level over 500 the legal limit in Japan. Feedstock, chicken and pigs too.

Government agencies are trying to increase exposure limits - our EPA according to PEER and recently by secret emergency order in the EU. They can do this without Congressional approval by simple submission to a review board and a quiet barely publicized "public notice." Rumor is, there's a battle raging in our EPA and FDA over it. The recently cut budgets will impact that - definately not in our favor. A routing of safety advocates against the increased limits. You should know that.

Of course, I've been hoping they don't cycle the contaminated foods into our less regulated pet food market via another country proxy, or accept it for crop compost like they may do with the fish again. There are just so many deregulated pathways with underfunded agencies and everyone else is paid to be sleepy at the switch.

There was an awesome article about a team of scientist that found a corelation between radioactive decay and Sun Spots or was it flares and the precesion of the sun or something. They were using the decay of something as a random number generator and noticed the pattern....
Cesium-137 half life is between 180 and 320 years. This is based on the studies at Chernobyl. This is old news, but here's the link.

[link to news.softpedia.com]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1296906

From your linkage:

" “Normally you’d say that every 30 years, it’s half as bad as it was. But it’s not. It’s going to be longer before they repopulate the area,” Savannah River National Laboratory nuclear scientist Tim Jannick, who has also collaborated in the new investigation, said at the AGU conference. The new estimates point out that the half-life for ecological Cesium 137, the variety out in the open, is between 180 and 320 years. This pours a stream of cold water on the Ukrainian authorities' plans to start reusing the land. "

Ecological Cesium 137 apparently is different from normal Cesium 137? Huh? WTF?

So I guess if radioactive decay rates are not constant after all does that mean that perhaps 4.5 Billion year age of teh Earth might really be off by perhaps 4.4 Billion years and Carbon-14 dating (if 'ecological', what the frack isn't 'ecological' by the way) is off, so perhaps the New Earth New Universe people aren't so far off base after allm, eh?

I trow not.

What is this 'Ecological' radio-active isotope stuff? Sounds like pure bullshit to me. We've had nearly 100 years to test all the known radioactive isotopes in all sorts of conditions, inside and outside... and yet, it seems accordig to this article (which I no way believe) that the mere fact a radioactive isotope is 'outside' in the 'weather' means that its half-life can be 6 to 10 times longer than if its kept in a coffee can, inside. I call, BullShit.

For starters the EPA could stop taking sensors offline every time the show a high reading. They could publicly show levels of Iodine, cesium, plutonium, and other radioactive isotopes in the air water and food DAILY.They can stop lying about checking produce and food being shipped from Japan to the United States,on a good day we inspect less than 2% of all food entering the country. They could stop comparing ingested radioactive isotopes to international flight, xrays,or natural back ground radiation they know this is a lie(proof here [link to www.nrc.gov]
How about a little truth? That goes a long way to earning trust.
