Nasa UARS update #10 - US hit Probable now | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1770559 United States 09/23/2011 01:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It doesn't work that way... Quoting: Deus ExBeing near radioactivity does not make something radioactive. All "radiation" is, is a stray part of an atom that has left it's host. It "shoots" out and can damage the atoms of an object it hits. Neutron radiation is the only type that can "activate" a non-radioactive material. so neutron radiation is what atomic bombs produce? because they sure contaminate stuff I thought space had the same radiation, as the sun is a giant reactor also back in the day we were told in school never to touch space junk because of radiation risks, are you saying that is now been revised? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1761493 Ireland 09/23/2011 01:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ] Yesterday was 0% chance of it hitting North America Today it is "low probability" (10-30% maybe??) chance Tonight.... It could hit? Possibly NASA has already said they do not know when, or where its going to hit. The FAA sent out a notice to pilots today. I'm not spreading fear.... I'm stating FACTS. Do you have a link to the FAA Notice? |

emerald_glow User ID: 924761 United States 09/23/2011 01:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | LOL this satellite tracker is such bs drama. Why in the world would they care to waste time and money with this other than drama. The odds of it hitting any one individual are 1 in trillions maybe more lol Quoting: myeyesropenow42 That kinda support the theory that someones are harvesting fear. Emotions are actual energy. At 20:00 and 04:00 hours it goes right over California. You can check your area by going to n2yo.com create an account to change the home location to where you are. Track Uars and 5 day prediction. Click on the details of each one that appears to go over your home location. It will show you the exact times it flies over you. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1781082 Actually if you don't want to set up account, just google satellite flyby. You put your zip code in and it will tell you when it will fly over you. It lists all of the satellites that will fly over your area. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1552815 United States 09/23/2011 01:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sky news reporting a good chance a large jet liner could be hit in flight. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1536503 Great ^.^ just my luck I'm getting wasted before my flight. If only I could find that special brownie... I said yesterday that I would hate to be flying the next couple of days. I'm sure they will take precautions and ground flights if need be. You may have some delays though. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1538111 United States 09/23/2011 01:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.nasa.gov] Quoting: UtahApoc Update #10 Fri, 23 Sep 2011 10:45:08 AM EDT As of 10:30 a.m. EDT on Sept. 23, 2011, the orbit of UARS was 100 miles by 105 miles (160 km by 170 km). Re-entry is expected late Friday, Sept. 23, or early Saturday, Sept. 24, Eastern Daylight Time. Solar activity is no longer the major factor in the satellite’s rate of descent. The satellite’s orientation or configuration apparently has changed, and that is now slowing its descent. There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent. It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any certainty, but predictions will become more refined in the next 12 to 18 hours. --------------------------------------- That coupled with the FAA Notice makes me think they know its going to hit the US now. Ok, well, just because there now exists a "probability", I would not say its probable.... your statistically off in your interpretation of the language. You should say, US impact now a possibility... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1671232 United Kingdom 09/23/2011 01:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The possibility of one of these pieces hitting a Airliner is about the same 1/3200 probability floating around. Only the 'area' involved contains more people hence the higher risk. I'd also put shipping into that category aswell, remember anyone under this thing who isn't at least 50 meters underground in a bunker, or outside sheltering behind a Eastern facing cliff/slope/wall is 'game' for the probabilities. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1532825 United States 09/23/2011 01:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | NASA is on twitter now actively seeking to stop panic : Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733218 @NASA: Nothing radioactive on #UARS. Main reason NOT to touch anything that you think could be debris: sharp metal cuts. NASA: @CaptainScenic @SubAstute Pieces of #UARS will have slowed down a lot by the time they reach Earth: could be as low as 30 mph. NASA: The chances that you (yes, I mean YOU) will be hit by a piece of the #UARS satellite today are one in several trillion. Very unlikely. NASA: Myth of "flaming space debris" - Pieces of #UARS landing on Earth will not be very hot. Heating stops 20 miles up, cools after that. wait..30 miles per hour? Some of these pieces weigh several hundred pounds and they're saying that they will traveling at 30 mph??? What about terminal velocity? Objects that are in freefall don't slow down, it might maintain speed or even increase speed but they don't slow down. The average skydiver falls at 240 mph with arms and legs outstretched....just sayin. |
