British accent and use of words like "dross" expose it as nothing more than a hoax.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 983877

Great scientific reduction!...although wouldn't it be equally likely that an advanced ET race could and would take on the language and manerisms of the culture which they were communicating with ? Especially if that race wanted a direct and immediate message to be sent unlike a more interpretive communication like crop circles. It is very important when viewing these mysteries to avoid being anthropocentric. The scientific community is always falling into this trap of assuming that ETs are limited to the same level of physics that we are and can't imagine technologies that don't apply to our understandings. Food for thought . it is best to suspend judgment. IMO.

Good God, anyone who knows ANYTHING about recording engineering can tell the voice is clearly a studio production, with technology that existed in the mid '70s. The speech was slowed down a little to get that Darth Vader-sounding sci-fi authority figure effect. Throw in a little reverb, compression and perhaps whatever other effect(s) and VOILA, instant "alien" voice. Sheesh!

Probably the most likely case, we also havnt seen a contact like that since at least to my knowledge which makes me wonder.
However this still doesn't explain the messengers ability to override the regular broadcasting on more than one channel as reported. Which IMO is where the true mystery lies

They are saying it was a hoax as they can not explain it.

Has anyone been arrested?

Has anyone ever come forward?
 Quoting: oRbZ

So therefore it must be aliens?

Come on.

So nobody was ever busted for it but that doesn't mean they can't explain how it could be done.

the Hannington UHF transmitter was unusual in being one of the few transmitters which rebroadcast an off-air signal received from another transmitter, rather than being fed directly by a landline. As a consequence it was open to this kind of signal intrusion, as even a relatively low-powered transmission very close to the transmitter could overwhelm its reception of the intended signal, resulting in the unauthorised transmission being amplified and rebroadcast across a far wider area.

What's more likely?
A UFO nerd in 70s Britain with good knowledge of electronics?

Or aliens?

Do they teach probability in math class anymore?

You don't "hack" analogue transmissions btw, you hijack them by overiding their frequency with a stronger signal.

How do pirate radio stations get on the air?

The signal needed to overpower the IBA transmission wouldn't have needed to be very strong at all according to the description of their broadcast setup.

The UHF network used was composed of multiple low powered transmitters overlapping and recieving the broadcast from the stations main transmitter.

You only had to hijack that one transmitter.

It happened in America in November 1987, a pirate in the US took over public broadcasting station WTTW 11 during an episode of Doctor Who.

This time it wasn't aliens, instead the pirates chose Max Headroom.

In 1977 the Southern Television IBA was a loose insecure network of low powered UHF transmitters publicly funded, localized and staffed by beards, literally badly paid hobbyists holding it together with spit and sellotape.

Some other beard with a home priate radio setup sat in a field and pretended to be an alien.

People like to hoax things... Dunno why, but they do it all the time.

The gullible masses did the rest as the tabloid press went to town.

The reporting of the incident by the sensationalist media was also heavily criticised by both msm and fringe press at the time.

The whole thing screams hoax and plenty of true believers wanting to believe.

I bet you believe crop circles are aliens too.

I dont know if this is real or not but I do not just dismiss stuff as fake because other people try to tell me to.

Yes I believe in crop circles.

I appreciate your in depth answer to do with the uhf signal, I do not know about any of that stuff which is why I put this up.

Hey OP, I can't do video's. Will you please do a written transcript of the whole 6 minutes?
I'd like to read the message.
I also think in the 70's it would have been possible for a celestial source to hack into transmissions, just as they still can....

"ITN News was Hijacked in 1977 by an external source claiming to be from The Ashatr Galactic Command. They do not know what caused it and it has never happend since. The Age of Aquarius is coming in 2012. This is a warning that some big changes are underway in 2012 or before."

What caught me about this was what was actually said about our governments and that we were coming in to the age of Aquarius.

I know this is old and that there have been several theorys about students pulling a prank but no one to my knowledge has come forward.

Please remember guys just because this is old does not mean everybody has seen it.

I would love to know what you guys think on this.

Would it be easy for a normal person to hack in to ITV news network and take over the audio for 6 minutes?

What the alienhackertard said about our governments has come true, so that gives us something to think about also.

Enjoy.
 Quoting: oRbZ

Thanks for sharing. Actually yes i have seen it before but it was quite cool. I think they never found who or what cause that hijack and if im not mistaken there was a couple of more event like this for another stations about those months. They claim its a hoax but was never fully proven.

Here's are question I have :

In 1977 did people have the technology to hack into FIVE MAJOR transmitters?

If they did, why has it not been done since? I would think if someone did it once, they would most definitely do it again.
 Quoting: kicktothehead

ABSOLUTELY, if someone got together the equipment to accomplish this, you would think that after the media buzz it created they would be tempted to have another go.

whoever or whatever hacked the British TV station in 1977, also made this crop circle. this crop circle was made in 2002 or 2003. The message is almost identical. You fucking idiot, of course they would use english, what you think if ET's wanted to share a message with us they would hack the station and broadcast in what ever alien language they use? Wtf would the point of that be, think about it logically, obviously they would use the language everyone in that area the broadcast is effecting use, and use accents that they are most familiar with so it is easily understood. Use you freaking brain for once.
