Yes everything is going up-seeds, fertilizer, fuel, maintainace&parts. One bright spot for the consumer is corn prices. They are predicting a fall back to the 4 dollar range. Gotta feel for the farmers in this, food productioon costs in all farming is being squeezed. Here in the UK, not only are inflationary issues squeezing profits for farmers, but the 'big' supermarket chains are in prallel squeezing too. Not tem mention the incentives for ditching conventional farming in favour of biofuel supplies. Tough time for farming, not exactly unplanned by TPTB methinks. |

I get a little sick to my stomach when I walk up to buy meat or anything else, I can't justify spending that kind of money on something I don't need, so I've stopped in recent months. And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it. I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die. |

Stocked up on meats a while back, so we are at least stocked for the rest of the year. I've been learning to cook venison recently, and will be learning to cook with fish this summer. Thanksgiving is coming up, hopefully turkey will be a good price, gonna stock up on that too. Just keep an eye out on sales, and coupons are your friend, right now canned veggies are on sale for 50 cents a can where I shop. |

I buy from a local farmer and have it processed at a local butcher shop. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 456756 Price included butchering. Think I'll have a steak tonight! thats because you bought a whole side of beef. And you could do the same, just do some research. And if you know how to process your own food it could be even cheaper, that's what we are doing with our venison. |

This sucks. Stop living high on the hog,for one thing. learn to eat cheaper cuts of meat. don't buy the name brand stuff all the time. You don't need it. eat lots more fresh fruits/ veggies, it helps to cut down on your grocery bill. stop being so darn picky, too. you're not that perfect. Buy cheaper cuts of meat. Here in the South, where I live, we learn to live off neck bones and collard greens. Eggs from our own chickens,we grow our own gardens and can/freeze that. 1 10 lb. bag of leg quarters washed and cut up and put into freezer bags will help spread out your meat situation.I buy the cheaper hamburger, and seafood, I won't even touch because of the recent oil spill last yr.I buy what I can afford, if that means buying 2 packs of chicken gizzards and neck bones to go with some cabbage i have along with potatoes, then hey, i can stretch it out. I can make soups out of the hamburger with lots of veggies and beef broth and I can stretch, stretch, stretch what i have to. People don't even know what pork neck bones are used for or howto cook them. Here's a hint, I use them as a seasoning meat to go with greens. Hell, I grew up on them as kid. You ate what was put in front of you or you went to bed hungry. We're not rich anymore. There are mothers in China telling their own children to eat because there are starving kids in America, and shes' right. I don't even stop at the deli. Too expensive for my taste. i grew up poor and i know what i can afford. I don't live high on the hog. Hell, I don't ever hardly go out to eat. I cook at home. Bills first. Food with what's left over. and I make it count, too. |

This year, the corn and wheat crops have either been drought stricken, or flooded in many areas. Time to get chickens, raise worms to feed them and think about how else you can augment your diet; everyone who has any land at all should have a garden going (more people in your family, more people to help) and investigate aquaponics; for a few grand you can set up a system that not only will feed you, but make you money. You don't need good dirt, a parking lot or driveway will suffice. The neighbors might complain until you start selling them super fresh organic produce at half the price of the grocery store... Consider what might happen if a long-length quarantine is put into effect (figure by this January to April) because of an Ebola spread. The stores will NOT be open. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 62974630 United States 09/19/2014 04:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Most of that charge is the cost for the convenience for the roasted and sliced part. I bought a roast last week at my local butchers for something like $3.00 a pound. (Slightly less, IDK 2.98 2.99 a pound, one of those odd cents numbers). Mind it was raw and I needed to roast it and slice it myself. I got about 10 pounds of solid meat for roasting, slow roasting it over night at less than 300F in the slow cooker, letting it stew in its own juices with lots of herbs and spices.... I sliced it myself. It is the work, the time, the energy and the spices and herbs you pay for at a deli for roasted (cooked) meats. Same thing applies for ham. Ham needs to be at least cured, if not fully cooked and sliced. You buy deli meats and you are paying for the prep time, not just the meat. Prepackaged deli-meats are cheaper because of mass production. Real Delis, the ones that actualy do the cooking and prep work at the location will charge far more at the store than large chain grocers which have a centralized location for mass production of deli foods. |
