Well, yeah, I'm sure there are higher ups in hollywood that know the Earth is approaching the galactic plane and that widespread destruction will ensue. Possibly they even planned some of these disasters to act as a distraction for the populace...to keep them under control.

None of the movies mirror or predict the future... They are infotainment. Simple, boring truth... There are a lot of things in a lot of movies, pretty much anything that people can think of. Doom is popular, so they play it up in the movies... Knowing didn't predict a major oil spill. It was just an oil rig fire... A minor scene.

Anyway, believe what you want to. It's certainly more fun to believe in a magical world where someone knows what is going on and has it all under control.

Truth is - it's all up for grabs!
