Dominique de Kevelioc de Bailleul: Suddenly the Baltic Dry Index (BDI), a key index that economist watch for signs of expansion or trouble ahead for the world economy, has collapsed. Because two previous steep declines in the BDI foretold stock market crashes, one may not want to wait too long for confirmation of the dreaded Hindenburg Omen to go short stocks and long booze, cigarettes and ammunition. This means food, raw materials, etc. The Baltic Dry Index has been going down since about 2008. Quoting: Old Coot No it hasn't. It hit its previous low in 2008 and then recovered. It's back down to that level in the last month alone. There has been no steady decline. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6630717 +1 "The world will soon wake up to the reality that everyone is broke and can collect nothing from the bankrupt, who are owed unlimited amounts by the insolvent, who are attempting to make late payments on a bank holiday in the wrong country, with an unacceptable currency, against defaulted collateral, of which nobody is sure who holds title." Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. The woman who is not pursued sets up the doctrine that pursuit is offensive to her sex, and wants to make it a felony. No genuinely attractive woman has any such desire. - H.L. Mencken, In Defense Of Women |

All I think when I read about the BDI crashing is that some captain somewhere is watching that movie "Virus" where jamie lee curtis is on that boat shipping stuff across the ocean in the 90s for a massive payout and saying "THOSE WERE THE DAYS" |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1457502 Canada 02/02/2012 07:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There was a discussion about this on zerohedge yesterday... Baltic dry has drop so much because, basic premise, is fewer ships needed as recent new builds have come online in the last few years with 10x the capacity of the ships before therefore same goods and newer bigger ships which are only marginally more expensive to run, so much more space supply for same or marginally lower demand equals much lower prices ie lower bdi... the only thing to cry about(croc tears, wah) is for shipping guys because they were building these ships when they could rent for a fortune and now sorry guys your greed has got the better of you, and you are not going to pay these new ships off anytime soon... my heart bleeds, not...... this indicator watch really needs to change to see the tonnage shipped which would a good replacement indicator for overall economic vitality...but for this indicator like the Hindenburg omen, pass performance is not indicative of future performance and in reality things are much different now compared to when these indicators 'worked'... one thing you may consider for your doom instead of the BDI... is "divergence we have now, where equity markets remain resilient as credit markets falter" (from philstockworld.com)these are now similar to mid-2007 through 2008 "which, as you'll recall, was not a particularly good time to be bullish on stocks" |
