US EMBASSY IN PAKISTAN UNDER SIEGE. Protests spread to Sri Lanka, Indonesia

ISLAMABAD – Hundreds of Pakistanis angry at an anti-Islam film that denigrates the religion's prophet clashed with police in the Pakistani capital Thursday, the most violent show of anger in a day that saw smaller demonstrations in Indonesia, Iran and Afghanistan.

The vulgar depiction of Islam's Prophet Muhammad in an American-made movie has angered Muslims across the world, with many taking to the streets to rally against the film. In recent days, the decision by a French satirical magazine to release cartoons crudely depicting the prophet has added to the tension.

In Pakistan, a crowd of more than 1,000 people tried to make their way to the U.S. Embassy inside a guarded enclave that houses embassies and government offices.
Riot police used tear gas and batons to keep stone-throwing demonstrators away from the enclave, and hundreds of shipping containers were lined up to cordon off the area. Some protesters were students affiliated with the Islamist hardline Jamaat-e-Islami party.

The army has been called in at Pakistan when a US diplomatic enclave in Rawalpindi was breached over protests against a purportedly anti-Islam film, Dawn news reported. The protest went out of hand, and the police was called in at first. The protest rippled across to Islamabad where another US diplomatic enclave was attacked, according to the Dawn News report. The army and police attacked protesters with tear gas shells. Ambulances were brought in to take the injured to the hospital.

The police said that the Pakistani police engaged the gunmen who wreaked havoc at Islamabad by firing at them.

Bani Amin, Inspector General of Islamabad Police, said more about four thousand protesters had gathered at four different sites in the city with the intention of converging on the diplomatic enclave.
"They are protesting about the video," he said. They don't know about the cartoons yet." Two people died in the protests earlier this week.

German magazine may add to debate

Meanwhile, the German satirical magazine Titanic will publish an issue lampooning Islamophobia next week, with a depiction on its cover that could be interpreted as being the Prophet Mohammed.

Staffer Martina Werner said the Titanic issue will take on film and politicians making political capital on Islamophobia, with a cover from an old movie poster.
Asked if it is supposed to depict Mohammed, Werner answered:

"Well, that lies in the eye of the beholder."

US warns Americans not to travel to Pakistan

US citizens should avoid travel to Pakistan, the State Department said on Thursday in a fresh warning that follows numerous protests, demonstrations and rallies in Pakistan that US officials said are likely to continue.

The department advised Americans to put off any non-essential travel to the country and "strongly urged" those who are already there to avoid protests and large gatherings.

At least 25 people, including 15 policemen, were injured in the Pakistani capital and the army had to be called in to contain a massive protest being staged against a controversial anti-Islam US film Thursday, Xinhua reported.
According to Geo News, the Pakistan Army was summoned to protect the red zone and diplomatic enclave in Islamabad from demonstrators. Islamabad's diplomatic enclave is home to most Western embassies, including the US, British and French missions.

Clashes broke out when thousands of university and college students from the neighbouring Rawalpindi city tried to force into the diplomatic enclave in Islamabad to register their protest at the US embassy over US film "Innocence of Muslims", reported Samma TV.

Hundreds of heavily armed policemen tried to disperse the protesting mobs with tear smoke but protesting students retaliated with stone-pelting at the police, smashing police vehicles and torching police checkposts.

AFP reported that Police have fired live ammunition in the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd, and that some students are armed with wooden clubs.

"I was ordered by my boss to disperse the crowd and that is why I had to open live fire, but the aim was nearby trees and not the demonstrators," Zaman Khan, a police officer deployed at the protest said.

At least two police checkposts were torched and an unknown number of police vehicles were damaged in the clashes.

Police even employed armored vehicles to fire tear gas at the students to keep them off the diplomatic enclave which is located in the northeastern part of the city.

As students could not enter the diplomatic enclave which is also protected by heavy containers in front of it, some of them began to turn to other places near the diplomatic enclave.
