What Linux to download?
I posted a few weeks back about a friend who got scammed into letting some bunch of cowboys gain remote access to his computer.

We're now trying to reformat his machine but nothing is working. Is it possible that they've panted a virus or whatever to stop us from reformatting?

What if we try Linux instead of the sieve, sorry, Windows?

Any help appreciated. If all else fails, Mr Remington is coming out. lol

Just because you dont know how to use a computer doesnt mean it has a virus.

Insert Windows CD/DVD
Restart and enter BIOS - enable CD/DVD as boot device.
Boot from Windows Disk (You may need to press something as the computer starts)
Select to delete the existing partitions and do a fresh install.

Wait a second. If you can't even reformat the hard drive, you're either doing something wrong or the computer itself is broken and needs to be repaired. Probably the hard drive.

What you need to do is get a cd-rom or disk with fdisk and some repartition software. Wipe out any hard drives and partitions. Reformat and repartition. Then reinstall windows. You can do this step WITHOUT the shitty CD windows tells you to do it with.

And yes, Linux also has some utilities to do this.

Just tried Linux Mint in an old laptop. UUUGLY.

Linux as a kernel is good, but GNU/Linux distros are the suckage for anything but computer nerds.
Google should get serious about OFFICIALLY releasing Android (which is based on Linux kernel, thus compatible with Linux drivers).

Fair comment, however I'm liaising with someone who does know and he tells me it's 99% certain it's got a virus.

Thanks for your input - we'll try that next!

Ah, just re-read this. First thing we tried I'm afraid. No joy.

We can get into bios no problem, won't then boot the disc and says both that thee is no hard drive fitted or that files are missing

Sounds like a BIOS-rewriting trojan or a severe hd or controller (possibly mobo) malfunction/crash. Try subbing a drive, if you have one to spare.

I got tired of my wife getting viruses and trojans,
so I loaded Ubuntu on her computer.
She knows ZERO about anything but Bookface and
her other nutty sites.
She had absolutely no problems with it, and hasn't
skipped a beat in several years now.

If you are looking for a good linux version,
Ubuntu is the best one to jump out of windows to.

Well, hopefully you took precautions and have important files (pirated mp3's, porn etc.) on a backup HD. Sometimes it's much easier and way faster to just bite the bullet and do a fresh install instead of wasting days trying to root out the problem.

HeHe, yeah, all the good stuff is backed up.

We are trying to do a fresh install but can't get in to do any changes. We can access bios, and change priority to the cd drive, but then it won't allow any alterations. Either saying that it can't find the hard drive, or that configuration files are now missing and or corrupted.

Try resetting the bios, pull the battery for a few minutes from the motherboard. Make sure the hard drive is connected properly, try another cable or power supply. You are being kind of vague, saying the system won't let you make any changes. That doesn't sound like any error message I've ever heard of.

But computers are simply, a virus is a virus, it has to be somewhere to interrupt your computering. So if you delete all of that data like on the hard drive, the virus is gone. If it's something loaded in the master boot partition, you boot up to a boot disk with its own minimal OS that allows you to reformat/repartition. If something has fried the hard drive, you'll need a new hard drive. Like if the virus has literally corrupted your hard drive beyond repair, you buy a new hard drive and format/install your OS onto that.

But so far what you are describing is just gibberish, saying the system "won't let" you. Computers will let you do whatever you want to do to them, IF you know what you're doing.

Well forgive me for the gibberish. I readily admit to not being an expert, but I'm simply relating what's happening. I do hear what you're saying, but what I'm really looking for is a pointer as what to do next - hopefully from someone who 'knows what they're doing'. I'll address my personal shortcomings some other time.

Re: What Linux to download?
You do this next.

You detail step by step what you are trying to do to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS. Then when you get to the "error" message you tell us exactly what it says, word for word.

Then we will be able to tell you exactly what to do.

But if you want an educated "guess" about what's going on, the hard drive is screwed and you can save yourself a lot of hassle by going and getting a new or used one, popping it in, and installing the OS on that hard drive. Used hard drives are CHEAP, you can probably get a 100 gig for 20 bucks at a local computer shop.

So detail what steps you are taking and error messages you receive, or replace the hard drive on a hunch that it's fubar.

And as I said, pop out the flat battery that holds the bios settings just in case something is screwy there. Put it back in a few minutes later, bios refreshed. Now go change back all your settings and try again.

You don't need "boot.ini" to reformat a hard drive. Maybe if you are booting into a striped down Microsoft Dos to start the reformat.

GET SAVED: Thread: Are you SAVED from DAMNATION?

"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." -- Galatians 5:14-26
