Re: The fabric of society is about to rip itself to shreds. Society must have 3 things in order to function. All are destroyed.
Very good succint analysis.

I would include that the members of any society need skills such that they can do the functions of that society. Much of my work has been on teaching skills.

Since we've become specialists post-Henry Ford and automation, then we've lost the basic skills that every people in history could do.

Also not every society is equal. We are meant to be a largely tribal people so the carrying capacity of our environment can support locally the society within its environs. As such urbanization tends to self-destruct as its ability to provide locally is diminished and requires more and more tribal cultures to send resources to the urban center.

That leads to a transfer of power, first to capitols then countries and now corporations.

Exactly back during the Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression, 70% of the population lived on family farms, not factory farms, they specialized in cows, chickens, gardens, grain, milk, jarring, hunting, fishing, etc. Now that number is reversed 30% live on farms, and they are factory farms that specialize in just one thing. They are giant chicken farms, or raise only cattle, or perhaps specialize in wheat. None are diverse enough to be balanced, let alone self sufficient.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31346902

This planet can no longer handle the extraordinary waste connected with the current mode of manufacturing. Nothing is made to last more than five years. This keeps profits high for the big corporations, but in the end it will kill the planet because of the constant demand for resources and the toxic byproducts of all that mining and oil extracted needed to provide the metals and power to manufacturers. Demands for cheaper sources of oil and or gas have been responsible for the development of fracking leading to toxic contamination of the water table and ultimately of people's water supply. Public demand for newer and greater technology, more of every possible product also means that that same public is constantly disposing of old consumer goods, most of which are not being recycled. The demand for larger more spacious homes has led to urban sprawl and is eating up former farm land, while factory farms take over the food production. Food supply can so easily be contaminated in a factory setting and worst of all livestock in that setting lead a cruel and miserable existence. Once upon a time in America people only replaced things when they were no longer repairable, and generally manufactured goods lasted a very long time. When they broke, they could be fixed. People kept things like cars stoves and refrigerators for 20 years or more. People lived within their means. There was no such thing as a credit card and people looked at credit as an embarrassment. That was until the big advertisers used psychology to brainwash the public that it was more humiliating not to keep up appearances. That true happiness depended on making that oh so important fashion statement. That people have an inalienable right to have whatever their little hearts desire right now. Buy on credit. Do not pay for six months or a year. All manner of credit schemes to keep people indebted, either to the banks directly or indirectly through the retailers. Debt has become so popular that even the car manufacturers got into the act.

What would happen if people suddenly woke up and stopped spending on unnecessary things? Demanded that products that didn't last would not be purchased? What if people demanded actual local produce? What if people stopped buying on credit? Suddenly there would be small businesses springing up to provide replacement parts. Little repair shops would come back. People might go back into farming. Who knows. Perhaps the fabric of society might return to something more viable.

A long time ago, I saw a political cartoon about Free Trade. I think it was from the 1860s or so. Even then they realized that Free Trade ruins nations because it creates a situation where products made cheaply somewhere else are imported into a country and compete with local products.

Now some places can't make some things or they can't be harvested locally. Rare earth metals comes to mind.

Besides those, most things can be manufactured locally. If people in China could only purchase their products locally, would their standard of living rise along with their wages? Probably so.

Importing cheap goods made with slave labor only enriches corporations.

Competition is a good thing when done locally. Then the players involved can compete to produce the products and the consumer wins. So does the manufacturer and laborers because it inspires innovation.

If people owned their property and grew their own food, it would create wealth. The better the property is taken care of, the more it increases in value. There's always entropy and some people don't take care of property, or the neighborhood changes and it falls in value. In rural areas, mostly property slowly rises in value based upon a lack of crime, fertile and productive soil, and a slow improvement of the facilities.

If one is productive on land, one can create more food as excess and sell it for profit. When one works harder in a factory, one might not get more profit, only hourly wages.

If one learns skills so you can fix more things, then this saves assets so you can reinvest what you have to make a profit. When relies upon other technicians, then you give away your assets for their labor.

Specialization and urbanization ruined America. We all can't be farmers, that's not what I'm saying. All people though can grow a garden, own some land, repair their cars in simple ways, and therefore gain more control over their lives.

Or be slaves to corporations.

Re: The fabric of society is about to rip itself to shreds. Society must have 3 things in order to function. All are destroyed.
The fabric of society is a very fragile thing. Most of it depends on imagination in order to operate and function. Say when most Americans wake up in the morning, they expect and accept many things as being true. They function all day long believing in these truths. Some work towards retirement, others barely make ends meet, and still others cannot cut it and stand around waiting for the proverbial government hand out.

There are 3 main keys that allow this system to function, and all 3 are now not only in question, but collapsing.

1. A functioning currency, "the dollar is king". This is no longer a true statement, most countries around the world have dumped the dollar, it was first backed by gold and silver, then it was backed by the promise of labor, and future labor, and now even that lie has become unrealistic. If math were involved in this investigation it wouldn't take one very long to realize that with the unfunded liabilities, and all the hidden debt, and the fact that this economy is now running off of constant money injection, that there aren't enough jobs, or laborers to ever cover the debt let alone pay it back. Stack on top of that pile a big stack of weapons of mass destruction like derivatives, and it is instantly game over, check match.

2. the rule of law. This country and our society is held together by an understanding of the rule of law, and the belief that those laws apply equally, and that justice is blind. No one that is paying attention believes the rule of law still stands in the United States. One only needs look at MF Global, a man pretending to be president who cannot provide a birth certificate, rigged elections where 140% of the population voted, HSBC laundering their money through the drug cartels, the largest prison population per capita on earth, The Federal Reserve a private family nothing Federal, and no reserves, Operation Gun Runner, Fast and Furious, Benghazi, Troops guarding Poppy in Afghanistan, the bank bailouts, the merger of state and corporations, the corrupt media, or the fact that huge corporations are paying nothing in taxes, while the guy flipping burgers at the Obamacare opt out McDonalds pays out the ass. Or how about an Obamacare that the lawmakers exempted themselves from. Or the biggest one of all, how about the fact that the Constitution the bedrock of all our laws has been shredded before our very eyes. NDAA, TSA anyone. No Boarders, no rules, No, there is no rule of law.

3. Food & water. Not only has what is left of our food supply been poisoned through genetic modifications, our water is tainted, and becoming worse. Radiation from fukishima has now leeched into most all sea life in the Pacific, and many fresh waters sources have been contaminated through fracking. But that isn't the real worry. The worlds food reserves haven't been this low since the 70's and that was at a point in time when the population of the world was 1/3 of what it has grown to be now. This is a direct result of record drought, record cold snaps, record floods, record storms, record weather period. I don't know if you've noticed or not, but this hasn't been getting any better. The world is literally hanging on by it's fingernails. The funny part about this, is that it doesn't matter if you have food stamps or not, if there is no food to be put on the grocery shelf! You thought the run on guns was bad, wait until you see a run on food!

So if the currency is destroyed, law no longer exists, and there isn't food available, then you picture what it will be like.

I agree it is fragile, but in a way it is also very elastic, I suppose.

OTOH, IMHO it doesn't depend so much on imagination as on thinking. It's thinking individuals - not so much "imagining" ones - who, IMHO, not only keep society going but also make it go forward.

More than half a century after the fact - and after the fact of WW II - it would be extremely non-PC to mention this. Exactly as it would be to mention that while Germany invaded Poland from the west, the Soviet Union attacked it from the east. The same Soviet Union which, after the war (and after letting its troops rape - how many ? - thousands of German women), was seen as part of the "liberators"...

Unsavory facts all... "inconvenient".

Politically correct is bullshit!

Americans slaughtered the indians and stole their land.
Muslims are killing christians right now.
Christians killed Muslims for years, but were threatened by muslim invasion for years, and vlad the impaler saved most of europe from being under Muslim rule. The USA claims to fight for freedom, but is not free, and is currently killing millions in the middle east claiming to be trying to root out Al Queda while funding them to fight Syria. Mexico has been destabilized for years to give Amerika a weaker nation neighbor state, and we currently do not have an imigration policy we have a mass invasion policy all designed to create a one government north Amerika!

Most of the villages and towns cheered the Nazi's as liberators from Stalin.

We fought Fascism during world war 2, but now Amerika is fascist!

World war 2 was paid for by the same banks on both sides.

We are now invading Africa in order to keep China from going there.

So, what is the lesson to all of this, History as in Sandy Hook is usually whatever you make it up to be. That is until enough people wake up and question it all, and who is giving the history lesson to them.

Lincoln, Held the United States together, and ended slavery, killing half a million Americans in the bloodiest war ever fought by this country, whenever all the south wanted was Independence and freedom from the tyranny of the north. So while the south tried to escape the slave masters of Federal Government, the federal Government pointed to oppressed people to justify the murder of millions and further oppression and ownership of the South.

The Federal Reserve, the biggest lie not ever taught in schools. 1912 no federal tax, from that point forward slaves.
