In the town of Bethulia in Judea, during the war between the Jews and Assyrians,
there lived a pious and beautiful woman named Judith. Her beloved
husband had died three years before and Judith had never came out of her
mourning. She no longer wore her beautiful clothing and fine jewelry, preferring to
dress very plainly. Judith sat all, day on low benches, praying and studying Torah.
She fasted on Mondays and Thursdays and lived modestly off the money her
husband had left her.

The Assyrian army camped outside of Bethulia and started to lay siege
to the town. No food or water could teach it; the people soon began to feel the
pinch. When hunger and thirst grew unbearable, the town’s leaders held a large
meeting. It was decided that if God did not do something to relieve the siege within
5 days, it would mean that He wanted the people to surrender, and they would.

When word reached Judith of the people’s decision, she, rose from her
mourning and want to see the town leaders immediately. “How can you be judges
of God’s will?’’ she challenged them. “I have a plan for saving our town from
hateful Assyrian rule. Just let me out of the gate before daybreak.” Having
great respect for Judith, the leaders agreed. Judith went home to prepare for her
mission.

Judith changed back into her most beautiful clothes and adorned herself
lavishly. She packed kosher dishes, food and wine in a large bag for her mission.
After taking her Siddur she left her home. By daybreak Judith entered the Assyrian
camp that was besieging Bethulia.

As soon as the Assyrian soldiers saw her they were taken by her beauty
and asked what she wanted. Judith told then that she wanted to join them, for the
people of her town were planning to forsake God. They welcomed her eagerly,
knowing how pleased the general Holofernes would be to have such a lovely
young addition to his forces. Judith asked for only one privilege: that she be
allowed to leave the camp early every morning to wash in the river and say her
morning prayers. The request was granted.
