I asked a postal worker I knew about this not long ago. He said if either of those took over the job the prices would go up for sure, even though they are competitve with each other. They already cost more than USPS, so it is likely true.

Yes and the postal service delivers to all locations in the US. There are many places where fedex and UPS do not deliver.
