While it is not called an 'asteroid" or a "meteorite" the bible does speak of such an event in Revelation, Chapter 8, Verses 8 & 9. The KJV says:


8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.



Revelation was written by St John and he was given a revelation by God. He was literally transported to the site of these future events by an angel and saw the events taking place.

How does a 1st Century Old man begin to describe the things he sees like Nuclear Explosions and missiles and helicopters and the instruments of modern warfare? He would of course couch them in the language and things that he was familiar with - not having the modern words for such inventions.

Thus "A great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea": - this could well be a description of a meteorite or a large asteroid crashing into the ocean. Of course it would be burning brightly, having gone thru our upper atmosphere at several times the speed of sound. It would be glowing white hot and would be emitting small burning pieces What an impact this type and force would or could have on the oceans chemistry - is anyones guess. But the ocean turning to blood red for a while sounds like a minor thing compared to all else that it causes to happen. A third of the ships at sea being destroyed by the impact of this mountain of fire and the subsequent tsunami's doesn't sound out of line. Especially if it were to hit in the north Atlantic in the spring before the hot weather had begun to lure more ships from the southern climates and from the Pacific back to the Atlantic. To think that 1/3rd of all life in the sea is also destroyed is again not a surprise. In fact, it seems quite reasonable to imagine such an event doing just that.

So is this Great mountain perhaps this asteroid that is supposedly going to crash into the Atlantic just off the coast of Daytona Beach by about 1400 miles? I have no idea. but the description does begin to fit when looked at from a first century perspective.
