Kyrgyzstan: US KC-135 refueling tanker crashed near the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border

The US Transit Center’s KC-135 refueling tanker crashed near the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border in a difficult-to-access area in the mountains, a Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman has officially confirmed, VoR Reported.

“We confirm that an airplane has crashed in Chuy Province. But it is not yet clear whether it is a military airplane,” the Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministry said. It did not rule out that it could be a KC-135 Stratotanker refueling military aircraft.

Ministry specialists and firefighters are working at the scene. The aircraft exploded and caught fire in mid-air. Its wreckage was scattered over a large area, he said.

This is a large size aircraft.

If any have lost their lives in the crash, may they rest in peace.

They believe that the crew died, but no word on how many people where on bored. Sad.

The kc-135 is a refueling plane, I'm sure it had a full load since it was just taking off.

The KC135 is a modified Boeing 707. 4 engines and a lot of speed/power. One of the fastest if not the fastest big bodied plane in the world.

US military plane crashes in Kyrgyzstan

A US military cargo plane carrying fuel has crashed at the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border shortly after taking off from American air force base at Manas. The search operation for the aircraft and crewmembers is underway.

The KC-135 refueling tanker lost contact with the US Transit Center, deployed at Manas International Airport outside Bishkek at 2:30pm local time (08:30 GMT) between Chorgolu and Cholok-Aryk - two villages in the Chuysky region of Kyrgyzstan.

Russia's Interfax news agency, quoting local media, reports that a wing from the plane landed on or near a residential house.

The airplane reportedly caught fire as it hit the ground. According to the Emergency Situations Ministry it had broken into three pieces when it crashed into an uninhabited area.

The Pentagon and US Central Command confirmed the information about the plane crash.

A US cargo plane has crashed after taking off from an airbase in Kyrgyzstan, local reports say.

The tanker aircraft had left the US Manas airbase near the capital Bishkek, officials told AFP.

The emergency situations ministry said the plane had broken into three pieces but information about casualties has yet to be released.

Seven crew members died when a US civilian cargo plane crashed at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan on Monday.

Witnesses of the Kyrgyzstan crash told local media that they heard a boom and saw an explosion.

The transport plane was carrying a cargo of fuel when it disappeared off the radar near the mountain village of Chaldybar, close to the border with Kazakhstan, Reuters reported.

The US military uses the Manas airbase to maintain its operations in Afghanistan.

A U.S. military refueling plane exploded in mid air and crashed in southern Kyrgyzstan on Friday, the Central Asian country's Emergencies Ministry said.

The aircraft took off from the U.S. military transit center at Kyrgyzstan's international Manas airport, which U.S. forces maintain for operations in Afghanistan, the Interfax news agency reported. The plane, used for inflight refueling, disappeared from radar screens at 3.10 p.m. (0910 GMT), as it flew near the Kyrgyz village of Chaldovar, the ministry said.

"(The plane) caught fire in the air and crashed," said a ministry official responsible for the southern Kyrgyz province of Chuisk, where Chaldovar is located, some 60 km (40 miles) from the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek.

Officials did not say where the plane was heading, and the U.S. transit center has declined to comment. A civil aviation official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said storm clouds over the region could have caused the explosion, Interfax reported.

Kyrgyz Emergencies Minister Kubatbek Boronov told Russian state television there were between two and five crew members on board the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. The ministry said witnesses saw the plane explode in the air, and a local government official said that debris was scattered over a 4 to 5 km area in a nearby mountainous area.

"Everything that has burnt has been consumed, larger debris like the chassis is still burning," regional governmental official Kanat Davletov told Reuters

"(Rescue workers) on horseback have gone into the mountains to look for the crew while it is still light."

Manas, established as a military base in December 2001, is used to transport U.S. personnel in and out of Afghanistan and has been used by other international forces fighting in the country.

U.S. forces lease the facility for $60 million a year.

The contract for the transit center, located near the Manas international airport near the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, will expire in July of next year, as Washington draws down its forces from Afghanistan.

Local news outlets are reporting that a C -135 tanker (most probably a KC-135) aircraft disappeared from radar screens near Kyrgyz-Kazakh border owned by U.S. Manas Transit Center.

According to Interfax, the Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministryconfirmed the information about the plane crash. Looks like citizens of Zhayil region saw the blast of the aircraft crashing into a mountain.

No people found at site of KC-135 crash in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, May 3 (Itar-Tass) - At the site of crash of the US KC-135 refuelling plane in Kyrgyzstan’s Chuya region no people have been found as yet, a rescuer told Itar-Tass on Friday.

The fragments of the plane, which are scattered around an area of one kilometre, are still on fire.
“We have only found a part of a parachute, but no crew members,” the source said.

The rescue operation is underway. Doctors, prosecutors and the police are on the spot.
