China's Chengdu rolls out re-designed FC-1 light fighter prototype
Anybody want to bet who else is on their "export" list? scratching

China's Chengdu rolls out re-designed FC-1 light fighter prototype

19/04/06

China's Chengdu Aircraft (CAC) rolled out its fourth FC-1/Super-7 Thunder Dragon light fighter earlier this month and aims for a November appearance.

The re-designed fourth prototype rolled out at a ceremony at CAC's facilities in the Sichuan province capital in mid-April (pictured below).

This prototype of the FC-1 is the first to feature air intakes. Chengdu has plans to fly the aircraft at the Zhuhai air show in early November.

Chengdu says work on the first production aircraft is well underway and will be completed at the end of this year. The production aircraft will incorporate the new design features unveiled last year, including the revised air intakes, an extended stake and larger vertical fin (Flight International, 26 September-2 October 2005).

Chengdu so far has only secured an order from Pakistan for 16 FC-1s but expects a large follow-on order following deployment of the first batch and hopes to raise interest from the Chinese air force and other potential export customers from the Zhuhai air show.

What I found funny was China making a big deal about their continuing to buy commercial airliners from Boeing. Yea, no shit. They're using their facilities to produce more fighters.

Let's not forget that commercial airliners are often striped out to be used as transports.

Not in the grand scheme of things.
The FC-1 is a light fighter with limmited ground attack capabilities.
It's more or less a very inexpensive fighter that is slightly slower and less manuverable than the F-16.
But you get a lot of bang for your buck at only around $30 million per plane.
It's not a challenge at all to any U.S. or Russian fighters.

"Is this significant?"

Well the first thing I have to wonder is that is these are the modifications that they are releasing on the open market, what new mods have they made to their main fighters. I'm assuming the intakes are related to some ttype of turbo charging. I'm still trying to find more specs on this one.

"Fighters are defensive planes"

Yea, and we never used any F16s in Iraq.

Like I said..the FC-1 has a very limitted ground attack capability. It more for air to air combat. It doesn't have the payload capabilities of the F-16.
The F-16 is primarily a ground attack plane with air superiorty capabilities.

Re: China's Chengdu rolls out re-designed FC-1 light fighter prototype
The FC-1isn't a bad plane at all but it is more like an F-16 light. It will definately be the work horse light fighter for the Chinese and many other Air Forces.
You have to remember...both the F-15 and the F-16 are being taken out of service and being replaced by the F-22 and the F-35.
In terms of the 2 new American planes it's obsolete before it's even been put into service.

Doesn't seem to have air to air refueling capability; limited ceiling. Seems to be a bargin price for what it can do. May have service issues, ie reliability, parts. A lot of bang for the buck.
