I read the article and am wondering did you miss this or just ignore it? At this point, it is already known that atmospheric oxygen is declining. What surprised Dr. Ralph Keeling was the finding that the rate of oxygen decline was less than he expected. It was less than what could be accounted for by fossil fuel combustion. With the reality of deforestation, conversion of agricultural land into urban and industrial areas and destruction of natural ecosystems, the rate of oxygen decline is even expected to be greater, but it was not the case. (Johnston, 2007) And then there was also... Although atmospheric O2 levels are gradually declining as CO2 continues to accumulate in the air from fossil fuel combustion, fortunately an O2 crisis is not yet a likely scenario. The oxygen decline of 0.0317% is considered not significant and should not arouse serious concern at this point. Now what's really puzzling is this sentence: “Currently the oxygen content of the Earth’s atmosphere dips to 19% over impacted areas, and it is down to 12% to 17% over the major cities” Really? Down to 12% in some cities? When the danger level is supposedly 19.5%? I don't buy it. To go a little further? I happen to work with medical gas and calibration equipment so I check the oxygen level quite frequently. I have never seen any readings that weren't between 20.9 and 21%... EVER. "Everybody lies." |

The question is, what are the levels really at now? Anyone got an air safety meter? Any links to monitoring equipment? Can't call this either way without some proof. And for the record... oxygen purity meters alarm at 19.5 and 18 percent oxygen. |

I bought six lemon and six orange trees when they were less than three feet tall. In three years they're now about six feet tall and growing every year. if you live in an urban area have even a slight bit of yard space, consider planting trees. The trees that bear fruit or nuts are best and first choice. But others will work, too. Just the ones that produce food too give you apples or oranges or peaches, etc., as an added bonus. Also, in the right climate, concord grape vines can be a wonderful addition to a yard. Again food, shade, plenty of O2, etc. And they're even pretty to look at. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 42047743 Canada 06/20/2013 07:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So what was your big fix for our current energy needs. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29493509 Something that doesn't involve bringing heavy industry/commerce to a standstill, poisoning the water supply with mercury, killing birds and fish, or nuking the entire planet. I'm all ears. Your logic is flawed; Power consumption is engineered to be stuck at a constant demand. Supply will be adjusted to regulate this demand in a profitable direction. Why do you think, with our current energy needs and problems, there are more powered appliances? More things plugged in 24 hours a day? Higher voltage/wattage everything? LEDs on everything that will hold them? We waste vasts amounts of power, because the same people who produce the power produce the items that require it. And they will milk that cow until it dies. The correct and responsible thing to do would be to simultaneously scale back our energy consumption while switching to less polluting sources. Open a geothermal plant, close a coal plant. Rinse and repeat. The reason such a thing seems impossible is because you all expect an overnight solution, which is ignorant, because there are none, unless you plan to kill yourself. Low-pollution, sustainable energy is not only possible, it's been possible for decades, and we could be making it happen, right now as I type. The ONLY REAL REASON it is not is because it will be difficult, and expensive, and less profitable, and nobody wants to take the responsibility. That's it, plain and simple. It would cost our overlords more money. It's a big ol' shit sandwich and we're all gonna have to man up and take a bite... but don't expect the ruling elite to bite first! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27124566 lol stop all the bullshitting I agree. If you are going to talk about this, get your facts straight or get out of the way. For as long as humanity has thrived, oxygen has been around 21% of the atmosphere. Healthy individuals can go as low as 18-19% without any adverse effect. And in fact they are using this in submarines, as well as in space, and lower the oxygen level on board to reduce the fire hazard. Below that, you get dizzy, disoriented, and get a "drunk" feeling. Somewhere around 15% you pass out. At 12% or so you die. The thing is, oxygen levels on the upper hand, is dealt with by mother earth by forest fires. The chance of fire increases exponentially with oxygen levels. This thread is bullshit from beginning to end. People with no fucking education are spinning off opinions like there is no tomorrow, and as a "doomer" I am fucking embarrassed to even be reading this thread. Unshit this fucking pit. Uneducated white trash should not be able to post. I reckon a simple 1+4 question before posting would stop most. |

WHATEVER User ID: 35111196 Netherlands 06/20/2013 08:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Read somewhere that the plankton in the oceans form the biggest supplier of oxygen on a global scale. But with the oceans becoming more and more polluted with socalled deadzones, less oxygen on a global scale will be available. The Amazon rainforest is another significant supplier of oxygen, and is also being systematically destroyed, as are other rainforests, means less oxygen in the atmosphere. With a worldpopulation of 7 billion and rising, there is an increasing demand on oxygensupply, made worse by more oxygen burning cars for the population etc., that will make things even worse . So it makes sense that eventually the oxygenpercentage in the atmosphere will go down to a critical level, probably sooner than later. Oxygen captured in amber measured an oxygencontent of around 30 percent in ancient times, when the whole planet was covered in forests and oceans were unpolluted unlike today ! |
