Anonymous Coward User ID: 4419687 United States 07/12/2013 08:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Because of all the deer flies this year due to a very wet spring, I thought I would repost this again. I really hate deer flies. You might look like an idiot using this method, but it really works. Deer flies appear to be highly attracted to the color bright Royal blue. Get a plastic Solo drinking cup that is bright Royal Blue in color. Coat the outside of the cup with something called Tanglefoot. Make sure the Tanglefoot is clear in color, not the brown kind. Walk (or drive around your property on a 4 wheeler or lawn mower)with the cup attached to a pole or antenna, and the flies will attract themselves to the cup and get stuck. Hundreds of them will come. Why? Nobody knows. The deer flies will be completely wiped out for around two weeks. Quoting: prichard072885 Some other helpful tidbits when using this method: 1. The flies seem to like a moving target. If the blue cup is attached to something moving, the flies are attracted to it quicker. Hanging a blue cup in a stationary position is not as good as attaching the cup to a moving target. 2. I always attach my blue cup to the FRONT grill of the lawnmower or 4 wheeler. I can then see all of the flies chasing the cup and getting stuck on it. They make a beeline straight for the cup. I have never been bitten by a deer or horse fly when using the blue cup. They always go after the Royal Blue cup and leave me entirely alone. I cut a hole in the bottom of the Blue Solo cup and hang it upside down over the tip or an old ski pole after I have coated the cup with the clear Tanglefoot. The clear Tanglefoot allows the Royal Blue color to really stand out in the sunlight. I then bungie cord the ski pole to my 4- wheeler or riding lawn mower. 3.Deer flies and horse flies are territorial. That means basically that the same flies attack you over and over at the same spots every day. Once you kill the flies from a certain sector, you will be totally deerfly free for about two weeks until new ones hatch and claim the territory again. I suggest trolling or riding a moving vehicle with the cup attached around areas where the flies are known to congregate. I suggest trolling along areas where the woods meet the fields, or around any bodies of water. You can even attach a cup to the antenna of your car and drive slowly around your property. I have had such great luck, so I would really like to hear of your experiences also. Lol @ that mental image. |

I once did battle with them in my driveway...but it was horse flys. I was only armed with a towel, but I noticed the more I fought them and waved the towel around, the more attacked me. I only got bit a couple times but I ended up killing about 20 of them bastards. |

Quoting: Vic-chick13 I'm going to share this with my hubby, he's a deer fly magnet! He usually uses sticky strips that you put on the back of a hat. It's sooo gross, he ends up with sometimes 50-60 deer flys stuck on the back of his hat. If he so dares, he can put a Royal Blue cap on his head, and then cover the top with the TangleFoot. They will then stick to the cap on his head but not bite him. |

Attach the cup to a pole and wave it above your head if you want, but once the cup is stationary it doesn't attract that many horse or deer flies. |

Quoting: Vision Thing They used to attack us while we were swimming when we were kids, we'd spend half the time ducking under water to escape them. THANK YOU for this info, OP. I have been reduced to tears from these pestilent creatures from Hell. Never had much luck killing them. |

Whalin Rift User ID: 34879198 United States 07/15/2013 12:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Update on my efforts... Cant seem to find the clear bird gell locally, only online. I did buy some clear sticky fly traps for windows. I taped them to a blue solo cup and taped that to the top of my floppy ranger hat and walked my yard. Yes I looked like a total fandago ranger and the wife and kids were laughing hystericly at me, but it works. Cought a bunch of deerflies. While I was walking I was saying why am I not being attacked by those damn flies because nothing was buzzing me. Turns out they go straight for the cup and never even noticed them. So if you ever see some dude cutting his lawn with a blue solo cup on the top of hit hat...that would be me! Thaks for the info OP! |

You could always attach a piece of string to the cup and hang it from a tree or gutter. Then let mother nature create a moving target in the wind. Last Edited by Informed1 on 07/15/2013 12:52 PM |
