Anonymous Coward User ID: 43779995 Portugal 07/21/2013 06:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | July 21, 2013 – WELLINGTON, NZ - A 6.9-magnitude earthquake has struck New Zealand, rattling the capital Wellington and some other cities. The quake was later downgraded to a 6.5 by the USGS. The quake on Sunday hit 57km southwest of Wellington at a depth of 10.1km, the US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of major damage and injuries after the earthquake but some water mains were broken, windows smashed and power lines downed. Wellington police inspector Marty Parker said there had been minor structural damage that had left parts of the city without power. No tsunami alert was issued. New Zealand’s GeoNet earthquake monitoring service described the 6.9 tremor which was felt widely as severe. “There was a rocking and rattling which lasted about 30 seconds,” a resident in the resort town of Nelson told the AFP news agency. It tremor was followed minutes later by another quake with a magnitude of 5.5 and came about 10 hours after a 5.8 tremor in the same region, which has been hit by multiple quakes in recent days. Recent quakes have been centered about 200km north of New Zealand’s second largest city Christchurch, where a 6.3-magnitude quake in February 2011 toppled buildings onto lunchtime crowds, leaving 185 people dead. The country sits on the so-called “Ring of Fire,” the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year. – Al Jazeera [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 43779995 Portugal 07/21/2013 09:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Update 12:44 UTC : We may conclude so far : a scary earthquake with the potential of a second Christchurch if the epicenter would have been located below Wellington, Blenheim or another populated area. Something we experience all the time at ER is that the major cities get all the attention. Smaller cities and villages are only uninteresting footnotes. Many people from Seddon and Blenheim were really irritated that nobody (mainly of the press) had any attention for them. Something regrettable indeed which we see over and over again in every corner of the world. Warning : the faulting map below shows many many faults in the greater epicenter area. The preceding days have proven that the whole area is really instable. The near future is simply very unsure. This is clearly an atypical earthquake with each time another stronger earthquake hitting. As NOBODY IN THE WORLD can predict what will happen next, people should simply BE PREPARED (see link below). Being prepared = a) know what to do when the shaking starts (in every shaking video after an earthquake we see that people are doing the wrong things) b) Run only out of the building when the shaking stops c) get away from the outer walls and move (if possible) to the middle of the streets, parks etc (one small piece of stone on your head and you will figure in the fatalities statistics of earthquakes) d) fix whatever strong object in your house (remember the baby who got killed in Christchurch when a TV set did fall on the poor baby). e) in case of strong/severe shaking GET AWAY from beaches and run for your life to higher ground. 30 meter higher is considered as safe. In wellington this might not be a problem. f) try to follow up GEONET instructions if you have still connectivity g) Use ONLY text messages or the internet to message friends and family members (Voice calls use much more bandwidth and are the main reasons that mobile communications are going down) h) make ure that you have a flashlight at hand as power can go down for many hours. Anonymous Coward User ID: 43779995 Portugal 07/21/2013 03:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Update 18:53 UTC : Wellington morning update : - Council inspectors will be doing a quick visual external inspection through the CBD. If you suspect your building has suffered damage, the building owner should contact an engineer to have it inspected before anyone operates out of the building. - Thankfully, there have been only a few minor injuries - Both Massey and Victoria universities are closed for the day - This is an excellent time to ensure your household and workplace are prepared for an emergency. Check out our “It’s Easy to get prepared for an emergency” guide to walk you through 12 Easy steps. We can expect more aftershocks. - Strongly advise people not to come into the CBD until mid-day, the rest of Wellington City is largely operating normally. The other cities in the region appear to also be operating normally. - Expect disruption to some services, which are limited or unavailable (due to many staff not coming in) [link to earthquake-report.com] |
