Brooklyn Bridge Beach plan brings sand and surf to lower Manhattan
Lovers of sand and sun no longer will have to troop to Coney Island or the Rockaways for a day at the beach.

The city will transform a desolate swath of land along the East River in lower Manhattan into a beautiful beach with sand, seating and waterfront views, the Daily News has learned.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer have set aside a total of $7 million for the groundbreaking project, which will be officially announced Thursday.

There going to allow fishing in that mess too....Isn't this right under a bridge...that seeps car oil, anti freeze, cigarette butts, aluminum cans, plastic bottles ect? Sounds like the kind of stuff you want a fish to swim in even your family!

To be fair the river has cleaned up alot since the 70's but its still has high Coliform counts when the rain water overflow dumps into the river before treatment....swimming wouldn't be safe because of the strong tides too....I used to fish there but its just catch and release...in the 70's the fish from the river smelled like diesel fuel....

There are still PCBs and Mercury in the sediments....a warning goes out anytime they dredge and stir up the bottom....There is still much to do before its a real beach...
