BREAKING: Via Rail train, bus collide at level crossing in Ottawa, at least 5 dead

Accident waiting to happen at level crossings. We always have cars getting totaled and people sometimes killed at commuter train crossings here in Boston. Another dumb thing some people do is walk along the tracks [with headphones on!] and get promptly squished by an oncoming train. Now all the stations [and Boston has a huge commuter rail network] have fencing everywhere so in order to get to the other side of the station or from a parking lot or whatever you have to take a ridiculous maze-like route.

The people on the bus where yelling for the bus driver to stop, but the driver kept on driving straight into the train!

Just saw something weird, or maybe not

CTV was interviewing some guy that was there on the crash site, and the reporters where interviewing him, but then some cops showed up behind him and basically escorted him out

6 dead now, 30 hospitalized

Was it an AR-15 semiautomatic assault style bus??

witnesses onboard say they were calling out to the driver to "stop, there's a train coming' he ignored them and kept driving into the side of the train

WTH?

Remember the terrorist plot last April that was planned against against VIA rail? I'm wondering who this bus driver is now, any news on him yet?

Huh?

6 dead, over 30 injured.

Reports are that bus went through security gate and hit train, pretty much decimated the entire front of the bus. From the pics, it's safe to say the driver of the bus died in the accident, while the train was derailed.

Some witnesses say the bus driver tried to break, some say he didn't heed their yells to stop, and some are wondering if he was suffering a heart attack or seizure at the time of the accident. They're looking at the transportation recording equipment (equivalent to an airplane's black box) to figure out why it happened. Until then we can only speculate.

No it was a fully auto military style bus with rubber grips and a laser sight

CBC is saying that the level crossing gates were down and the lights were flashing notice of train approaching - and the driver did not stop but kept going.

Could this be driver suicide? Taking a bus load of people with him?

Watch the video at the above link, an Arab women is being interviewed and said she is relieved her husband named "Osama" who was on the bus is okay.

The only thing that I've heard was that the driver was an experienced driver with 10 years of service for OC Transpo.

I take a bus every day from outside of Ottawa into the downtown core. I come in from the east end so this wouldn't have affected me. I just had this feeling that I shouldn't get on a bus today.

I just heard on tv that there is now speculation the bus driver may have went in to cardiac arrest before the bus hit the train
