Here's a list of films you might like that are not the average list. Some of them will make you think, not just be action films. Many of these have trailers you can find on youtube. 1. Le Temps du Loup (The Time of the Wolf) This is a excellent French film. An unknown plague has poisoned the water supply. It obviously causes civil unrest (which is never shown) in the large cities and people leave for rural areas. One couple heads for a cabin they own in a little village, but immediately have problems. They end up holing up with some others in a railroad station with a very mixed group of survivors. What I like about it, is how very fragile our civilization is. It realistically shows the issues with acquiring a resource we take for granted now, but that is in very short supply, and the difficulties of firewood, hunting, foraging for plants, etc in such a world. How long will the plague last? 2. One Hundred Mornings This is an Irish independent film. Two couples (it's implied the two guys are brothers) retreat to an Irish village because of an event of unknown origin. There's nothing on the radio. The only world that exists is that village, and so, how do you deal with issues like the law when the only representatives of the law are now insisting on being paid in the absence of order? It gets rough at times as they are really starving. Their moral code changes. 3. 28 Days Later Still my top zombie film since it's really about a rage virus, not zombies. It seems far more realistic and horrifying. It also makes sense as they are not undefeatable, so part of the issue is the inhumanity of the survivors while also dealing with the infected. 4. Stakeland This is an independent vampire flick. It's clearly an infection. They spread and do terrible damage but are not unstoppable. Terrible cruelties exist because of a religious cult. The film I think realistically portrays some basic survival that people would actually do to limit newcomers to a town. 5. The Day Not your average cannibal film. A group of evolved beings co-exist on the Earth, and then they decide to take over. In a way it is highly analogous to the Neanderthals and modern day humans that overlapped for a time. They are tribal and hunt humans. Realistic fight scenes. 6. Blindness A highly controversial film merely because a lot of the blind or their families took offense to it. Blindness affects one man in perhaps the LA region. He then infects the people around him. They in turn infect others. All are made blind...well almost. Because of fear, the blind are herded into FEMA camps but without anyone to take care of them except themselves. Some of course are sociopaths while others are regular people and others altruistic. It degenerates as more and more people are infected and becomes a world-wide phenomena. Some of the blind escape and find a world gone to Hell. They make it on the outside mostly because of one person, but work together. It does have some of the most brutal (but realistic) sex abuse in it because of doom. While that is very hard to tolerate (wait and see) it is wise to wake people up, for it won't be Camp Kumbayah post-collapse. I'm going to do something different and recommend some films that are not doom films but really are doom films. They are historical films in which doom is caused, but people are trying to make it. 1. Strayed This is a French WW2 film. France falls quickly despite what you have heard about the French Resistance. (Much of that was actually combating the Vichy government of collaborators). Anyway, people flee the Nazis, and so you have ordinary people leaving en masse to the countryside. It is very similar to what could happen with civil war in your country, or an invasion. Many people are killed, but a group of survivors holes up in an abandoned house. One person has a lot of skills but a secret. Then some soldiers show up. Then other things happen that disturbs the peace that the survivors have made. It is very realistic historical doom, but not overwhelming doom. 2. Black Death This is a medieval doom flick. The Black Death has arrived and witchcraft is blamed. Soldiers are dispatched to a village, and it's apparent there is no Black Death in the village...but.... Watch it. 'Bet you like it. 3. Resistance This is a very recent (and sometimes ballyhooed) British film. The Normandy Invasion fails. England is invaded by the Nazis and one squad makes their way to a village. The men have mostly left to fight as guerilla soldiers. This leaves the women defenseless. Critics didn't like a film in which the Nazis are not brutal, but human beings. It's hardly an apologist film, but perhaps one realistic way that such an invasion might have really changed things. Good to watch, hard to find. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 41713542 United States 09/19/2013 09:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In a lot of ways, Outbreak is a better film than Contagion. A true pandemic if it gets out of a controlled area, would be a scourge. It ends a little too happy clappy. You can bet, if it was isolated to one region and without any hope, there is a good chance that they're burn it out. Very good. The Road is extremely depressing as is Melancholia. Both are good films just be prepared. It is very hard to find, but the BBC made a tv series called Survivors (not the old one, the remake). While both were good, the newer one was better in my opinion (but there were very smart aspects of the old one especially in talking to strangers for the first time post-collapse). If you can find it, please watch it. It realistically deals with an outbreak and some people who seem immune or have recovered, and then how to go one with society with so many dead. Then you would have pockets of very fearful paranoid people (they did an excellent episode on that), the problems with governance, agriculture, scavenging for goods post-collapse, altering morals, etc. We're driven to want to watch a happy cathartic drama, but that's not always the case, and I liked the balance in this very fine series. It ran for about two seasons (seems like it ends abruptly as I recall). I really liked Jericho, but things were too easy for a post-nuclear release film in all honesty. They never really had to worry about fallout, which made little sense, nor issues with winter or even electronics from EMP. |
