Anyone out there register as a Democrat then switch to a Republican?
I did. When I first registered to vote, I told my parents I wasn't sure what party to register for. I was going to register as an Independent, but my father said I might as well register as a Democrat. My parents were democrats, and we live in a very democratic state. So I did, but a year later as I got prepared to vote for the first time, I realized that my ideas aligned much more with Republicans. I changed my political party to republican and have been ever since.

I wonder how many people don't think for themselves or just register for what party their parents or friends are registered for?

If you did change your political affiliation based on your own independent thinking, cheers to you, but I fear this is very uncommon.

If anyone has changed parties, I am curious what led to the change. Wha was said or what did you learn to change your mind?

So are you registered to vote? What party? Do you participate in the voting process?

Re: Anyone out there register as a Democrat then switch to a Republican?
For years, I aligned myself with democratic idealism, probably, like you, much because of my parents' views (they were definitely hippies).

Once I began to actually pay attention, I realized how mistaken I was. Although I would not call myself a republican by any means (more libertarian, I suppose), my state requires you to register D or R to vote in primaries, so the state thinks I'm republican.

My father has since woken up, too, so I imagine his story is very similar. Mom is still hugging trees and preaching equality for everything. She won't change.

I don't think it's really so uncommon. Becoming more aware or "awake" seems to go hand in hand with this kind of shift, would you agree?

Wow, your story is very similar to mine. I am in Maryland, so yeah thats why I chose Dem or Rep to vote in the primaries. Independent I wouldnt have been able to. My wife learned this too as she was an Independent when we first started dating. Now we are both Republicans. I am more conservative than her. But it's funny, my father has like yours gone right and my mother is still in left field. They cancel each other out when they vote lol.

Funny, we're neighbors; I'm in VA :)

I love the quote that goes something like, "if you weren't liberal when you were young, you have no heart, and if you aren't conservative later in life, then you aren't paying attention"
